Travelling is a very popular kind of free time activity nowadays. People have always been interested in exploring new places and meeting new cultures. But sometimes it’s impossible for us to go somewhere abroad. Nevertheless today we can try to make our dreams come true and go on a virtual trip to some of the largest cities in the world.
a) When you’re speaking about travelling which words can you associate with it? According to everything you’ve said what information in your opinion would be important for visiting foreign countries/ cities? (How to get? What to see? Where to stay/to eat? What to do?) So this will be the main information we’re going to deal with today when making our virtual trip.
a) the first thing everybody should do before choosing where to go is what they would like to see there, i.e. what places of interest they’ like to visit most of all. Let’s see how well you know the cities and their famous sights. Matching (on Board):
Control: (orally) e.g. The Colosseum is situated in Rome.
b) Which of these countries/cities would you like to visit and what would you like to see if you had a chance? Don’t forget to use the Second Conditional about unreal situations.
c) Watching video: Which cities do you think were the 5 most popular cities to visit in 2014? Were there any of the cities from this list?
II.
NewOpp. SB)
Before reading: Look at the photos and say what city is Vancouver? What country is it situated? Would you like to live in it? Why?
While reading: Complete the table with the information about Vancouver. Then match the links in blue with the corresponding information items. You may work in pairs.
Control: orally
Write a 3-paragraph description about Vancouver using the following words: an attractive and large city, which is famous for, is located, has a population of, famous sights include, you could visit, you would love to see/go to/try…
Each row is writing about one of the information item: General facts and history/things visitors would like to see/ things to do in Vancouver.
Imagine you’re a tourist agency team.
You have received a letter in which you’re asked to recommend a trip to one of the largest cities in the world. In groups use the given information to choose the preferable city to visit and make a tourist guide of it. Decide on three links with additional information. Find it on the informational list and write it out. Try to make a day-visit plan including places to visit, eating out and things to do.
Not only big cities welcome their visitors, but also small ones, like our native town. There is an English proverb “East or West, Home is the best”, which means that we should not only love the place where we live but also do our best to preserve its historical and cultural sights and make the city attractive for visitors.
IIІ.
Listen to the song and say which cities are mentioned in it? ( Ex. F p. 19).
