The Procedure of the Lesson

  1. Lead-in. Lexical and Conversational Warm-Up.

Teacher: On today’s lesson we will talk about special attractions that can be found in the three different English-speaking countries as well as about the attractions of our native city, Kharkiv.

  1. Look at the board. Can you remember the names of the attractions and their locations? (The pictures are fixed on the board. I point to each one, the pupils are to name  them and the places where they can be found.) Right! They are: The Huge Dinosaur in Drumheller, Canada, The Big Pineapple in Queensland, Australia and The Huge Lion’s Head in the Philippines.

The words to praise: Good remembering! You are doing really well!

  1. Do you like amusement parks and attractions? Then, I believe it will be interesting to you to practice telling the key facts about them, learn some more information about one of the three places and learn how to present the attractions of your native city be advertising them.  Who knows,  maybe one day you will meet foreign guests to our city. On this lesson you will learn how to tell them about the most attractive places to see and the best activities to do in Kharkiv.
  2. On the previous lesson you read the text about the three attractions. Will you now remember the phrases to describe them? Work  in your groups, you are to match the phrases with the definitions. Use the sets of cards with the phrases and the definitions on youe desks.

The phrases are:

Roadside attractions

To come in all shapes and sizes

Put on display

Local artist

Popular tourist attraction

Wildlife reserve

To have a sweet tooth

Tropical fruit

Pose for a photo

  1. Checking. Teacher: Group 1, choose any definition and read it aloud . The two remaining groups are to say the corresponding phrase. Group 2 – choose another one and do the same. Group 3 – choose one and read it as well. We do so till we check the phrases. (Keep it up! Right on!)
  2. Teacher: Now it’s time for us to decide on the roles for everyone of you. Group 1. Who is the writer in your group? We need two presenters and a leader.

Group 2. Decide on the writer, two presenters and a leader.

Group 3. Do the same.

Now choose the corresponding card with the role you get and put it next to yourself so as to remember it for me and you.

Your task now is to use the phrases you’ve just reviewed to make the statements about the three places shown in the pictures. You need to make three sentences in your group with the three different phrases. I’m timing. You have two minutes to write them. The writer is to write them down, the presenters are to read them then and the leader is to make sure everyone participates and to brainstorm the ideas with the rest of the group.

  1. Checking. Group 1. Read your sentence. Groups 2/3 – raise your hands if you are ready to translate. The groups read the statements – the remaining ones are to translate. (The translation is done to make the groups listen to each other).
    1. Speaking. Using the Topical Vocabulary in Speaking and Listening Activities.

  1. Speaking. Teacher: After you remebered the key facts about each of the three places, will everyone of you think and say: Which out of the places would you like to visit and why? What would you like to do and see there? Try to remember everything you learnt about them. You are to use Conditionals Type 2 or Wishes to share your ideas. For example,

Board: If I went to Canada, I would see the Huge Dinosaur. /I wish I could see the Huge Dinosaur in Canada. I would …

Use the text in your books to help you formulate the answers.  (Individual students answer)

  1. Watching the Prime Time 2 Documentary.  Forming Students’ Listening Comprehension Skills .

Teacher: I think it would be interesting for you to know more about one of the attractions. Look at the TV screen. Can you guess what it’s going to be about? Right! About the Huge Dinosaur in Drumheller.

  1. Pre-Watching.
  •  Scan the summary of the documentary. Do it silently, please.
  • Can you see the gaps? There are words to fill in the gaps with. Let’s read them

aloud. There’s one word you don’t need to use.

  1. While Watching.
  • Watch the documentary and fill in the gaps in the summary with the following:

to enjoy, made it, is filled, to walk through, to run into, took a trip

Drumheller is a sleepy town in Alberta, Canada with the population of 8,029 people. However, if you are ever visiting it, don’t be surprised if you happen 1)…………………… a terrifying beast, with big sharp teeth. This statue is four and a half times bigger than a real T-Rex. We were glad we 2)………………. to the top because we were able 3)…………………….. gorgeous views of the surrounding landscape from the jaws of a dinosaur.

Drumheller is home to the richest deposits of fossils and dinosaur bones in North America. In fact, dinosaurs were the prehistoric rulers of these lands for over 100 million years. After seeing Drumheller’s dinosaur statue, we 4)………………………….to the Royal Tyrrell Museum to see amazing displays of dinosaur fossils and bones that were discovered in the region. My favourite part of the museum was walking through the Cretaceous Garden. It’s a recreation of plant life in Canada about 65 million years ago.

Alberta itself 5)……………………..with many interesting and strange geological features, like hoodoos, which are rock formations shaped like columns that have been formed over millions of years by wind and water erosion.

  1. After Watching.
  • Read the full text now to see if everything is correct.
  • Use the summary to help you complete the statements. I’m sure you can cope with this. (hand-outs with the questions to the documentary from Prime Time 2 iebook, each student works individually).
  • Checking. Read the completed statements and translate each one, please.
  • Group work. What new facts have you just learnt about the place? Discuss it in your groups and be  ready to share your ideas from the group. Remember about the roles you perform. The writers are to write, the presenters are to say the statements. You have one minute to do it.

The words to praise: You haven't missed a thing!

  1. Creating the Advertisement of Kharkiv Amusement Park Attractions. Public Speaking Skills and Creative Writing Skills Formation.
  1. Teacher: “Imagine you meet a foreigner who is the first time to our city and he/she is asking you where he/she should go to have a nice walk and have fun at the same time. What places would you recommend for him or her to visit?”

The teacher puts down the pupils’ ideas on the board: the City Zoo, the Aquarium, Shevchenko Gardens and Horky Park, of course!

  1. Aim/Objectives/Motivating.

“Which one is the most attractive for you? Today, you are to create the advertisement of the amusement park for visitors to our city. I’m sure you love your native city and the city amusement park as well. So, let’s present it in such way as every guest to the city would rush to have fun there!”

  1. Setting the task. Planning in Groups.

Each group gets an advertising poster of the attractions and activities to do in the park with the missing information about either sport facilities or amusement rides or playgrounds. Each group has a different advert blank which they are to fill with exactly the information their group were to find for the lesson.

Teacher: “Your hometask for today was to find some information about the sport facilities, amusement rides and outdoor/ indoor playgrounds and the park in general.  Group 1 – you are to advertise activities for sporty people, group 2 – you are to advertise amusement rides, and group 3 are to advertise outdoor and indoor playgrounds. Use the information you have to complete the advert with, the pictures to decorate your advert with and the two presenters are to be ready to present it in 4 minutes. Just write in the missing information on your topic and describe the park itself in brief in the beginning. “

  1. Work. Observing and Correcting Pupils’ Work.
  2. Presenting the Adverts. (In 4 minutes, I ask the presenters of the groups to take turns to come to the board and present their adverts. 2 minutes per a group for presentation).
    1. Assigning Homework.

Be ready to retell the summary of the documentary you watched on the lesson.

  1. Summimg-Up the Lesson.
  1. Thank you for your great effort during the lesson! All of you participated actively – you were helping each other, taking turns to do the tasks and you were cooperative, so you’ve made wonderful teams!

Which part of the lesson did you like most?

Can you tell guests to our city about the places to see and things to do in Kharkiv?

  1. Now, it’s time for you to evaluate your work during the lesson. If you think you worked hard, spoke with confidence and expression, had a small number of mistakes in your speaking, shared ideas, opinions eagerly – then take a red card for you.

If you think you worked actively, but spelled, pronounced the words with mistakes, made many grammar mistakes and skipped some of the activities – take a yellow card.

  1. Raise your hands with the cards now. Let me see and agree or disagree with them.
