APPEARANCE AND CHARACTER. Describing people.

Aim: students will be able to describe people’s appearance and character.

Equipment: textbook Enterprise 3, pictures, Power Point presentation.

Procedure

I. Introduction.

 1. Greeting.

Teacher: Good morning, children!

Pupils: Good morning, teacher!

    Teacher: I’m glad to see you!

Pupils: We are glad to see you too!

Teacher: are you O’K today?

Pupils: We are fine, thank you!

 2. Aim.

Teacher:  So, today we are going to speak about appearance and character. You’ll be able to describe people and yourselves.

Teacher: So, let’s review our vocabulary, discuss the features of personality  and appearance.

Teacher: Let’s start with our poem.

3. Warming – up.

I am sad and quiet,                  

He is rude and mean,

She is loyal and bossy,

But we are ambitious.  

Teacher: Look at the explanations of the adjectives and guess their meaning.

 GUESS THE ADJECTIVE.

  1. People who make decisions quickly.
  2. People who like telling people what   to do.
  3. People who work hard and like participating in a lot of activities.
  4. People who want to be successful in life.
  5. People who seem to care only about themselves and forget about other people’s feelings.
  6. People who know what they want and do all they can to get it.
  7. People who do their work with a lot of attention and thought.

II. Main part.

  1. Listening

Teacher:  Read the adjectives under each picture, then listen and tick (√) the adjectives you hear.

Teacher:  Read the text and check your answers for the listening activity.

Forget about fortune tellers and horoscopes. The shape of a person’s lips can say a lot about them. The 5,000-year-old art of face reading is gaining popularity. So, take a look at the shape of someone’s lips to find out about their personality...

People with full lips are usually responsible. You can always trust them to do what you ask them to do. They are also decisive: they make decisions quickly. On the other hand, they tend to be rather bossy. They like telling other people what to do!

People who have a thin upper lip and full lower lip are energetic. They work very hard and like participating in a lot of activities. They are ambitious as well; they want to be suc­cessful in life. However, these people tend to be self-centred. They seem to only care about themselves and they sometimes forget about other people’s feelings.

People with thin lips are determined; they know what they want and they do all they can to get it. They are careful people who do their work with a lot of attention and thought. However, they tend to be reserved: they don’t like showing their feelings or expressing their opinions. They can also be mean; they don’t like sharing things or spending money.

Teacher:  Look at these famous people’s lips and talk about their characters.

e.g. Sylvester Stallone has got lips with down-turning corners. It means he is generous.

Pupil 1: Brad Pitt has got full lips. It means he is decisive.

Pupil 2:  Bruce Willis has got thin lips. It means he is determined and careful.

Pupil 3: Richard Gere has got a thin upper lip with a full lower lip. It means he is ambitious.

Teacher:  Look at these famous people’s lips and talk about their characters. Do you guess whose lips are there?

Teacher:  Let’s revise how can we say about the personality’s age.

Pupils: pupils` possible answers.

Teacher:  Look at the photos and try to guess the personality’s age.

Pupils: pupils` possible answers.

 

             Teacher: What can we say about their characters?

Pupils: pupils` possible answers.

Teacher: To talk about the type of personality’s skin we use dark complexion or light complexion.

Teacher: Look at the photo and try to describe appearance and character of the person.

Pupil 1: (pupil’s possible answer.) She has got a light complexion. She is in her early thirties. She has got a thin upper lip with a full lower lip. It means she is ambitious.

Pupils: pupils` possible answers.

III. Summing-up

Teacher: So, pupils. What can you do now?

Pupils: I can identify and use different personality adjectives,

            I can read someone’s lips,

            I can identify someone’s age,

           I can describe someone’s appearance,

           I can describe someone’s personality.

Teacher: Well done. Your homework  will be to describe you classmates’ appearance and character.
