WE LOVE UKRAINE (6 FORM, competition in the mixed groups)
Objectives: to revise and practice vocabulary on the topic “Ukraine”; to develop free speaking skills; to form students habits of communication according to the situation; to learn some interesting cultural and historical facts; to develop creativity and language intuition, to broaden students outlook; to work in mixed groups; to cultivate a tolerant attitude towards each other. Equipment: сards with the tasks, paper flowers and ribbons with questions on the back, sheets of papers, felt pens, pictures of Kyiv’s famous places.
PROCEDURE
T. Dear friends, nice to see you. Welcome to the competition “We love Ukraine”. Look at the board. There are flowers on it. Each student comes to the board, take a flower, read the question on the back and answer. (The flowers are red, yellow, blue. The possible questions: 1. What is the capital of Ukraine? 2. Where is Ukraine situated? 3. What are the colours of the Ukrainian flag? 4. Which city is named after Ukrainian hetman? 5. What is Ukraine’s main river? 6. Which mountains are in the west of Ukraine? 7. What is Ukraine washed by? 8. What is the highest peak in Ukraine? 9. What is the traditional Ukrainian dance? 10. What is the traditional Ukrainian dish? 11. What is the national musical instrument? 12. What is the national Ukrainian dress?) T. Now dear boys and girls, you join three teams according to your flower colours: “Red”, “Yellow”, “Blue”. (Put the cards with the names of the teams on the tables). You may take your places. We start the first competition.
Task 1. Ukraine’s Records. Match the sentences (1-8) and (a-h). 1. The highest mountain in Ukraine is Mount Hoverla. 2. The deepest lake is Lake Svitiaz. 3. Kryvyi Rih is the city in Ukraine which stretches the furthest. 4. The tallest building in Ukraine is the Residential Complex at 7, Klovskyi Descent, Kyiv. 5. Task 2. “ Ukrainian Symbols” T. You have to draw official or unofficial Ukrainian symbols and present them at the board. T. Thank you for your stories. Could you hang your pictures on the board?
Task 3. “Ukrainian Cossacks” Read the text and choose the correct answer.
At the beginning of the 16th century, Ukrainian Cossacks started to live in big groups. We (1)____ the territory where they (2)____ “Zaporizka Sich”. (The students come to the board and stick the flowers in the form of a circle). Very nice. T. But we need ribbons for our wreath. Here they are. Take them, please. (The students take coloured paper ribbons with mixed words from three groups on the back. Three groups of words. Holidays Symbols State Easter Marigold flowers Flag New Year Willow tree Trident Independence Day Bandura Anthem Christmas Snowball tree Constitution) T. Now you need to join three groups. But you have to guess yourselves in what way. (The students go round the classroom, tell each other their words. They have to come to conclusion that there are categories: “Holydays”, “Symbols”, “State”). T. Boys and girls, you are very smart. Really you join three teams: “Holydays”, “Symbols”, “State”. You can take your places.
Task 1. “Travel agency” T. Imagine that you work for a travel agency. You are to create a 10-sentence advertisement – an invitation on a tour to Ukraine. (The teams present their advertisement at the board and then hang their posters on the board).
Task 2. “Kyiv’s famous places” T. Match the places in the pictures and their descriptions.

All three groups have worked very hard and the results are … But the team … is the winner. T. OK. Now come to the board and stick your coloured ribbons to our wreath. What a beautiful Ukrainian wreath have we got! Thank you everybody. So, our competition is over. I hope you have liked it. You were active, smart and tolerant.
