A LESSON PLAN

THE TOPIC: “LET’S GO SHOPPING”

The 6th grade

Level: Pre- intermediate

Aims and objectives:

  •          to revise  vocabulary related to shops, size and prices;
  •          to teach pupils to use lexical material on the topic in speech;
  •          to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills;
  •          to develop memory, thinking, attention;
  •          to develop culture of communication;
  •          to develop financial literacy and personal budgeting skills
  •          to teach pupils to be polite, respectful.

 

Equipment:  Power Point Presentation, Student’s Book, Workbook.

 worksheets; signal cards; cards with

                    words, arrow of questions.

 

                            The motto of the lesson:

           WHEN WE WANT TO BUY SOMETHING,

                           WE GO TO THE SHOP.

 

 

                                       PROCEDURE

  1. Organization moment.
  1. Greetings.  Introduction of the topic and the aims of the lesson.  (3 min)

T: Good morning, pupils. I am glad to see you. I hope you are in a good mood today and during our lesson you will be active and hardworking. As you know, now we are learning the seventh module “Teens Life”. So, as all teens like doing shopping at their free time our today's lesson is devoted to the theme "Shopping". I think shopping plays a great role in our life. Because every day we buy something.

T: At today’s lesson we are going to:

  •          to revise  vocabulary related to shops, size and prices;
  •          to teach pupils to use lexical material on the topic in speech;
  •          to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills;
  •          to develop memory, thinking, attention;
  •          to develop culture of communication;
  •          to develop financial literacy and personal budgeting skills;
  •          to teach pupils to be polite, respectful.

 

The motto of the lesson:

           WHEN WE WANT TO BUY SOMETHING,

                           WE GO TO THE SHOP.

  1. Warming-up.

T: Answer the questions: 

- Do you like doing shopping?

- Do you often go shopping?  

-What things do you buy every day or very often?

-What do you like to buy?

-Who do you usually go shopping with?

T: Very good! Would you like to go shopping with me right now? So, let’s go shopping. But, wait a minute! Have you got any money?  (Ps answer).If you haven’t got money you can earn your pocket money by using your knowledge right now and at the end of the lesson we’ll see how much money have you got.

 Are you ready? Let’s start!.

    Main body. (35 min)

  1. Vocabulary revision. Brainstorming

1)T: Let’s revise different shops.

(Вчитель показує на малюнки магазинів, учні називають)

2). True or false.

T: And now let’s play a game with signal cards. Listen and agree or disagree with the following sentences using your signal ”YES”-“NO” cards:

  1.    You buy bread at the baker’s. +
  2.    You can’t buy shoes at the clothes shop. +
  3.    The newsagent’s is the place where you can buy milk, cottage cheese and butter.  –
  4.    Those people who sell things are shop- assistants. +
  5.    We can buy medicine at the chemist’s. +
  6.    You buy butter at the greengrocer’s. –
  7.    The fishmonger’s is the place where you can buy fish and seafood. +
  8.    That person who buys things is a customer. +
  9.    We can’t buy meat at the butcher’s.-
  10.                         People go to the greengrocer’s to buy some fruit and vegetables. +

T: I see most of you know about shops and shopping very well. And now we can go on our work

 

3) Work with Student’s Book. VOCABULARY

T: A) Complete the sentences with the names of the shops in the box.  ( ex.1, p.86) (учні доповнюють речення правильною назвою магазина)

T: Listen and remember how to pronounce the right size when you are in the clothes shop. (учні запам’ятовують правильну вимову розмірів).

And now, let’s remember how to pronounce the prices and the money. But first look at the blackboard. Do you know how these currency signs are read? (Учні запам’ятовують правильну вимову знаків валюти, цін і грошей).

  1. Reading.
  1.    Pre-Reading Activity. Work with Student’s Book. Ex.2, p.86

T: Look at the picture. What do you think the teenager is going to buy?

  1.    While-Reading activity.

T:Read the dialogue in groups and find out.

(Учні читають і перекладають діалог за ролями)

  1.    Post –Reading Activity.

T: Let’s complete the table according to the dialogue.

(Учні заповнюють таблицю інформацією з тексту діалогу)

  1.    T: And now let’s watch a video about the shops and shopping. Please, be very attentive while watching the film, because you should be able to do some tasks after watching.

(Учні слухають відео)

  1.    T: To check your listening skills we’ll play a game “ An Arrow of Questions”.  I will spin the arrow , and depending on which question word the arrow points to, you will have to create a question about the video and provide the answer. (Учні складають запитання  до відео за стрілою)

 

1)What is the name of a big shop with different departments? ( The name of a big shop with different departments is a supermarket).

          2)How are the local shops called? ( The local shops are called Greengrocer’s, Butcher’s , Baker’s)

          3)Where does Jenny usually do the shopping? (She usually does the shopping at the supermarket).

          4)Where is she going today and what is she going to  buy there? (She is going to the market to buy fresh fruit and bread).

          5) Where is Jane now? ( She is at the chemist’s now)

          6) Who is the second character in a video? (The second character in a video is David)

          7)What shop is he going at? ( He is going to the sports shop)

T: Work with Workbook. Open your workbooks at page 73. Ex.A Match the phrases. Then complete the sentences. (Учні спочатку утворюють словосполучення потім записують їх у подані речення).

 Roleplaying dialogues.

T: And now I’d like to listen to your dialogues prepared at home. Your homework was to roleplay the dialogues using products and goods. So you are welcome! (Учні розігрують діалоги по ролях, які вони підготували вдома).

                                            At the clothes shop

Shop assistant: Can I help you?

Customer: Yes, have you got this T-shirt in other colours?

Shop assistant: We’ve got it in white, black, red and purple. What size do you want?

Customer: Medium.

Shop assistant: OK, in medium we’ve got black and red.

Customer: And in purple?

Shop assistant: No, just black and red.

Customer: OK, red. Can I try it on?

Shop assistant: Yes, of course. The changing rooms are over there.

(pause)

Shop assistant: Is it OK?

Customer: Yes, I’ll take it.

Shop assistant: That’s £10.95. Would you like to pay by credit card or with cash?

Customer: Cash please. Here’s twenty.

Shop assistant: OK, thanks, that’s nine pounds, 5 p change and here’s your receipt.

Customer: Thanks. Bye.

 

 

                                At the greengrocer’s 

A: Good afternoon! Can I help you?

B: Good afternoon! I’d like to buy two apples. Are your fruit fresh?

A: Yes, of course. They are fresh, ripe and tasty. Would you like anything else?

B: Could you give me an orange?

A: Yes, certainly.

B: And two bananas, please.

A: Is that all?

B: Yes, thank you. How much is it all together?

A: That’s 5 pounds.

B: Thank you very much. Good bye!

A: Good bye!

T: Thank you. You are very artistic and talented. Your dialogues were wonderful.

  1. Useful tips

How to stop spending money?

Do you spend too much money? Lots of teenagers love shopping. You can go to supermarket every weekend and buy too many expensive things. Read on for some advice.

  1.               Make a list of what you spend money on. Look at the end of the month. You’ll probably be surprised.
  2.               Ask yourself: why am I buying this object? Do I need it or do I only want it at this moment?
  3.               Do things that are fun and free: talk to friends, go for a walk, ride your bike, borrow book from the library.

III.Ending of the lesson.

  1.    Summarizing.  Evaluation.

T: Well, guys it was a great job.  We’ve worked hard. We discussed a lot. We can see that shopping has really become an important part of our life. We can’t imagine  our life without shopping. Did you like our lesson today? What task was easy/difficult/interesting for you? Let’s calculate how much money you have earned?

 You have done lots of useful activities. All of you were active and have good marks. Thank you very much for your work. Good bye! Have a nice day!

  1.    Homework.

Your homework is Ex. 7b, p. 73. You have to complete the blanks.
