Virtual Learning Environment 

A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) is an online system that helps 
teachers and students learn and communicate. Students can use a computer, 
tablet or smartphone to access lessons and other learning materials. A VLE 
can be used by schools, colleges and universities. 

From Distance Learning to Online Learning 

Distance education has existed for a long time. In the past, students received 
lessons by post. They completed exercises and sent their work back to their 
teachers. This was useful for people who lived far from schools and 
universities. 

In the twentieth century, new technologies changed distance education. In 
the 1920s, some universities used radio to teach students. Later, universities 
started using television. 

In the 1980s and 1990s, computers and the internet became more common. 
Universities started using computers and online networks for education. 

The internet made online education much easier. Students could receive 
information, communicate with teachers and complete courses without being 
in the same place as their teachers. 

VLEs Today 

Modern VLEs offer many useful tools. Students can watch videos, listen to 
audio, read texts, complete tests and communicate with teachers and other 
students. 

A VLE can include: 
• online lessons; 
• video conferences; 
• recorded lectures; 
• discussion forums; 

• chats and email; 
• tests and exams; 
• grades; 
• online whiteboards; 
• group projects. 

A VLE is similar to a Learning Management System (LMS). An LMS helps 
teachers organise courses, provide learning materials, communicate with 
students and assess their work. 

Three Types of Online Learning 

There are three common types of online learning. 

Synchronous learning means that teachers and students learn at the same 
time. For example, they have a live Zoom lesson. 

Asynchronous learning means that students do not have to study at the same 
time as their teacher. They can watch a recorded lesson or do an assignment 
when they have time. 

Hybrid learning combines online and face-to-face learning. For example, 
students can have some lessons at university and some lessons online. 

COVID-19 and Online Education 

Online learning became especially important during the COVID-19 
pandemic. Many schools and universities closed their buildings, so teachers 
and students had to work online. 

VLEs helped students continue their education from home. Teachers could 
give online lessons, send homework and check students’ work. 

However, online education also had problems. Some students did not have a 
good computer or a reliable internet connection. Other students found it 
difficult to concentrate or communicate with their classmates. 

Advantages and Disadvantages 

VLEs have several advantages. 

Students can study from almost anywhere. They can often study at a 
convenient time. They can watch recorded lessons again and use different 
types of learning materials. 

Online learning can also help students who live far from universities or who 
cannot easily attend traditional classes. 

However, VLEs also have disadvantages. Students may have less face-to-
face communication with teachers and classmates. Some students feel lonely 
or have problems with motivation. 

Technical problems can also make learning difficult. A slow internet 
connection or computer problems can interrupt a lesson. 

Conclusion 

VLEs have changed the way people learn. They make education more 
flexible and accessible. At the same time, online learning needs good 
technology, teacher support and communication between students. 

For many learners, a combination of online and face-to-face learning can be 
useful.
