- завдання на встановлення відповідності;

1.Read and translate the textPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF METALS AND ALLOYS

The word constitution used with reference to metallic substances does not have the same meaning as composition. Constitution denotes the manner of arrangement of the metal atoms as to geometric form in solid crystals, and the regular or ordered arrangement of different kinds of metal atoms and their relation to each other in such a crystal.

The formation of metal crystals within a melt begins at each cooling surface of the liquid mass and extends from the exterior to the interior as heat is lost from the mass. Every change in the conditions of cooling, such as increasing or decreasing the rate at which heat is conducted away from the freezing mass, will have an influence on the size and shape of the crystals and, therefore, on the constitution and properties of the solidified mass.Melting and Boiling Points.— The temperature at which a metal melts,  is  called  the melting  point, the  metals  of  lower  melting points are generally the soft metals and those of high melting the hard metals. The boiling point of  a substance  depends  on  the surrounding  pressure. The term "boiling point" refers to the temperature at which the metal boils under normal atmospheric pressure.Electrical Conductivity.— The electrical conductivity of a substance is the electrical conducting power of a unit length per unit of cross-sectional area. The electrical resistance of metals or alloys is increased by decreasing the size of the crystals and, therefore, increasing the number of crystal boundaries. In general, all metals increase in resistivity with increase in impurities. The resistivity of metals is also increased in most cases by an increase in temperature.Heat Conductivity.— Heat conductivity is measured as the heat-conducting ability of a unit length or thickness of a substance per unit of cross-sectional area.Magnetism.—-Magnetism is measured as the magnetic force exerted by a unit volume of a substance under standard magnetizing force. Iron, cobalt and nickel are the only metals possessing considerable magnetism at room temperature, and they become non-magnetic when heated to a certain temperature. Strong permanent magnets have been made chiefly of one of several compositions of steel, but in recent years a number of magnet alloys of much gteater magnetism, able to exert forces many times their own weights, have been developed.

1.Read and translate the text: METHODS OF ANALYSIS

The analysis of a complex material usually involves four steps:sampling, dissolving the sample, separating mutually interfering substances, and determining the constituents of interest. The first step, sampling can be a significant problem, particularly in industrial applications.Sampling is complete when the subdivision is small enough to permit analysis. The second step is the dissolving of a sample. If we know the nature of the sample we use a suitable reagent.Gravimetric methods  involve a weighing operation as the finalmeasurement.Gravimetric analysis has been developed for almost everything from A (luminium) to Z (irconium).Gravimetric procedures may be done in various ways by precipitating, by dissolving, by removing as a volatile compound.Volumetric methods involve measurement of that volume of a solution of known concentration which reacts with a known amount of the sample. Such a solution is called a standard solution.Volumetric techniques are now applicable to most of the elements and to many specific inorganic and organic compounds. They.are widely used in all phases of chemistry, in medicine, and in many allied sciences.Physico-chemical methods depend upon the measurement of physical properties other than mass and volume. Such methods are important when the simpler methods of analysis are inadequate.

Methods of separating a solid and a liquid are built around two processes: filtration and centrifugation.Fin ration is the process of passing the suspension of solid and liquid through a porous barrier which will trap the solid. The barrier may be filter paper, sintered glass, asbestos matting, glass Wool and others.Centrifugation is mechanized setting (or floating) and depends upon the difference between the densities of the solid and the solution. Gravitational setting is usually inadequate. A centrifuge can be used to enhance the gravitational force moving the particles. Most centrifuges operate at hundreds of revolutions per minute. Extremely difficult separations require speeds of tens of thousands of revolutions per minute.

 1.Read and translate text Matter

It's well known that any matter is composed of large numbers of very small mass participlescalled moleculesThey are a state of continuo's motion. In a solid they are closely packed and give to thesolid its definite shape. In a liquid, the molecules have a weaker cohesion and travel withsome freedom, so that the liquid takes up the shape of the vessel in which it's contained. Ina gas ,the molecules are still mobile and relatively far apart. The cohesive force is small andthe gas fills its container and is easily compressed or expanded. When substances are heated the molecules move more intensely ,and expansion or pressurearises. An atom is the smallest participle if matter and it generally exists only in combination withother three kinds of participles - electrons, protons, and neutrons ,and the numbers ofparticiples determine the kind of element. An electron has a negative electric charge. A proton is positively charged. A neutron is a changeless mass. The neutrons and protons of an atom are linked together to form  a compact nucleus, whilethe electrons travel in orbits round the nucleus like planets round the sun. The simplehydrogen atom has a single proton as nucleus and a single electron as planet. The atomicweight of an atom is the number of protons and neutrons it contains. The atomic number isthe number of protons in the nucleus ,normally the number of negative or positive charges isequal, and the atom is electrically balanced.

If we compare various states of matter, we shall easily find out their connection to each other as well as their differences. A liquid is unlike a solid because it has no definite shape, but it is like a gas because it can flow. A gas is different from a liquid because it has no bounding surface, but both a liquid and a gas can take the form of any vessel they are placed in. A solid has a definite shape resisting any attempt to change it and is thus different from two other states of matter. All these three states of matter are very much alike and most substances can readily be placed in one of these three categories or change one for the other. A solid may become a liquid when it is heated to a certain temperature (to a melting point) just as a liquid becomes ice at a freezing point or water becomes gas at a boiling point.

Some gases are liquefied at room temperature by increasing the pressure. Such substances as chlorine, ammonia and sulphur dioxide are often transported as liquids under pressure. Gases are compressible, they become hot when subjected to an increase in pressure, as in a bicycle pump. And vice versa, a gas becomes cooler when it is allowed to expand through a valve. Applying such facts gives the means of liquefying gases or of making a refrigerator.

Each substance consists of very tiny building-blocks called atoms. They attract each other and combineintolarger units-molecules which are in a constant state of vibration. The molecules of a solid, for instance, having a great attraction for each other, are placed very close together. In a liquid the attraction between the molecules is much less, and the ties between the molecules of a gas are rather  loose.

A common example is water. It freezes and ice melts at 0 °C. Two states of matter — solid and liquid — are in a kinetic equilibrium: a bit more or less heat may change the substance from one state to another. Another border-line between such states of water as liquid and gas is 100 °C (a boiling point) when one state easily changes into another under standard atmospheric pressure: thus water turns into vapour. Evaporation of water can take place at any temperature. A liquid begins to boil when vapour pressure is equal to the external pressure. At higher pressures water boils at higher temperatures, at lower pressures water boils at lower temperatures. The boiling point of water may be greater under some other conditions, e. g. when salt is added to the liquid.

1.Read and translate text  Automation  and engineering

Automatic control now appears in many field and involves many control instruments and apparatus. Their usage embraces a great variety of machines, plants and processes. The essential parts of a basic automatic control arrangement are: ( a) controlled condition, ( b) A device   for   measuring the value of effecting a change in the controlled condition, ( c) apparatus capable of effecting a change in the controlled condition , ( d) means for operating the regulating unit in response to the measuring unit. The fundamental feature of this basic arrangement is the dependence of the regulation of a number of stages linked together to form a continuous chain. Although the controlling unit operates the plant, it's the plant which actuates the controlling unit. The performance of any controlling instrument is, therefore, dependent on the particular system of which it forms a part. A simple example,, in which the measurement, automatic control regulation are incorporated in one housing can be found in thermostatic control of motor car engine-cooling water. In this case the temperature measurement is effected by a sensitive capsule attached to a valve which regulates the amount of water allowed to pass through the radiator. This produces the basic closed-loop   system. The resultant cooling water temperature depends on factors, such as the engine and radiator performances. In general, engineering is a science that deals with design, construction and operation of structures, machines, engines and other devices. Engineer is a person who has received technical education and has a basic knowledge of other engineering fields, because most engineering problems are complex and interrelated. The term engineering is difficult to translate into Russian because it has a lot of meanings. Mostoftenitistranslatedas: инженерное дело,техника,машиносторение, строительство .There exist the following main branches of engineering: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and electronics Engineering, Electric Power and Machinery, Electronic Engineering, Communications and Control, Computers Engineering, Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering, Naval Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering and Safety Engineering.

Civil engineering deals with the design of large buildings, roads, bridges, dams, canals, railway lines, airports and other constructions. A civil engineer must have a big knowledge of the properties and mechanics of structures and soils, and of hydraulics and fluid mechanics. Among the main subdivisions in this field are construction engineering, transport engineering and hydraulic engineering.

Engineers working in the field of mechanical engineering design, test, build and operate machinery of all types. A mechanical engineer must be trained in mechanics and hydraulics, metallurgy and machine design.Electrical and electronics engineering is the widest field of engineering, concerned with systems and devices that use electric power and signals.

        2. Write questions to the text:

At the end of the XVIII and beginning of the XIX century the relative combining weights of various elements were experimentally determined; thus, the concept of chemical equivalent arose and the atomic weights of different elements were established. The development of these concepts was |due for the most part to the works of Dalton which made it possible to describe the quantitative composition of substances by their atomic constitution and chemical formulas. By the beginning of the XIX century atomistic conceptions had already won wide recognize.

1.Read and translate  the text

According to atomic theory all matter is composed of atoms. There are many kinds of atoms. Each atom consists of a very small, positively charged nucleus and a number of light negatively charged pa "tides called electrons, the latter revolving around the nucleus at high speeds.

A negatively charged body s one which contains more electrons than its normal number. A positively charged body is one which contains fewer electrons than its normal number. In a conductor the electrons are continually detaching themselves from certain atoms and re-entering other atoms. The larger the number of free electrons in any substance, the greater is the conductivity of that substance. Almost all metals are good conductors of electricity, with copper being one of the best conductors of all. An insulator is a substance which contains no free electrons, glass, paper, rubber being the most common non-conductors.When a cell or any other generator is connected so as to form a continuous path of conductors, the free electrons begin to move in a definite direction. This flow of electrons driven through a conductor is called an electric current .As mentioned above, an electric current will flow provided there is a continuous path of conductors, i.e. an electric circuit. If broken anywhere, the electric circuit will stop carrying a current. A direct current (d. c.), an alternating current (a. c.), the voltage, the electromotive force (e.m.f.), a potential difference and resistance are fundamental terms for every electrician. When electrons flow in one direction only, the current.is called a direct current. When electrons flow first in one direction and then in a other in a periodic manner, the current is called an alternating current. It has been known for centuries that certain black, heavy stones have the property of attracting iron, this property being called magnetism. A body that exhibits magnetism is called a magnet. The two parts of a magnet that show the strongest magnetism are called the north pole and the south pole. In long, thin magnets the poles are near the ends. Magnets not only affect ordinary iron, but they affect one another. When a pole of one magnet is brought toward a pole of the second magnet, they will repel if both are north poles or both are south poles, but they will attract if one is a north pole and the other a south pole. The region in which magnetic forces act is called a magnetic field. When placed in a strong magnetic field, iron becomes magnetized. Iron in this condition is called an induced magnet. In soft kinds of iron, induced magnetization is exhibited strongly. The inducing field being removed, magnetization disappears. In hard steel the induced magnetism is less strong, but it is kept more or less permanently. Electricity and magnetism are closely connected.

1.Read and translate the textD. I. MENDELEYEV

D. I. Mendeleyev, the great Russian scientist was born in Tobolsk in 1834. After finishing school at the age of 16 he went to St. Petersburg and entered the Pedagogical Institute. He graduate from the Institute in 1855. In 1866 Mendeleyev was appointed professor at the University where he gave a course of lectures on chemistry. His lectures were always listened to with great interest and attention. Even in a class of two hundred students everyone was able to follow his discussion from the beginning to the end.Interesting experiments were made in his classes. Both he and his student-assistants worked long hours in preparing the demonstration so that all would go well.At the University Mendeleyev taught classes in the morning. In the afternoon he made experiments in his two-room laboratory. At night Mendeleyev spent much of his time working with the cards on which he put down information about each of the chemical elements.Mendeleyev made thousand of calculation, wrote a lot of letters, studied many reports. Everything in the world that was known about the chemical elements Mendeleyev knew. For years he searched for missing data. All those data were being brought together and grouped in a special way. In 1869 the description of more than 60 elements was completed, and Mendeleyev published his Periodic Table.

The Periodic Table was a new era in chemical thought. D. I. Mendeleyev was the first to discover the law of dependence of the properties of the elements upon their atomic weights. This law is so important that all who to understand the principles underlying atomic energy must study it. According To Engels Mendeleev’s discovery was "a feat of scientific research" . The discovery of atomic energy is one of the greatest discoveries of the human mind. The scientific basis of this discovery was the atomic theory explaining the structure of the atom. Mendeleyev suggested a system of classification in which the elements are arranged in the order of increasing atomic weights. The main idea of the Periodic system is that of the periodic repetition of properties with the increase of the atomic weights. But Mendeleyev did more than that. He predicted existence of unknown elements for which he left gaps in his table. He even described the properties of these elements. With the Periodic Table at his disposal a chemist needn't learn all the properties of all the elements. When he knows the properties of one or two elements in each group, the Table will give him a very good idea of what to expect of the other elements. The Table is, was and will be referred to and used in solving research problems of industrial importance. In addition to this work Mendeleyev paid much attention to many subjects of an applied chemical nature. He was the first to put forward the idea of studying the upper layers of the atmosphere. Taking an interest not only in chemistry Mendeleyev wrote a number of articles dealing with a wide range of subjects, the problem of aeronautics being among them. With alt his scientific work he atill found time to help students in their problems.

1.Read and translate the text   Industrial engineering and automation

A major advance in 20th century manufacturing was the development of mass production techniques. Mass production refers to manufacturing processes in which  an assembly line, usually a conveyer belt, moves the product to stations where each worker performs a limited number of operations until the product is assembled. In the automobile assembly plant such systems have reached a highly-developed form. A complex system of conveyer belts and chain drives moves car parts to  workers who perform the thousands of necessary assembling tasks.ass production increases efficiently and productivity to a point beyond which the  monotony of repeating an operation over and over slows down the workers .Many ways have been tried to increase  productivity on assembly lines: some of them are as superficial as piping music into the plant or painting the industrial apparatus in bright colors, others entail giving workers more variety in their tasks and more responsibility for the product. These human factors are important considerations for industrial engineers who try to balance  an efficient system of manufacturing with the complex needs of workers.Another factor for the industrial engineer to consider is whether each manufacturing process can be automated in whole or in plant. Automation is a word coined in the 1940s to describe processes by machines do  tasks previously performed by people. The word was new but the idea was no. We know of the advance in the development of steam engines that produced automatic  valves .Long               before that,  during the Middle Ages,  windmills had  been made to turn by taking advantage of changes in the wind by means  of devices that worked automatically.

Automation was  first applied to industry in  continuous-process manufacturing such as refining petroleum, making petrochemicals, and refining steel. A later development was computer-controlled automation of  assembly line manufacturing, especially those in which quality control was an important factor. The machine is known to be the major andefficient means oflab our in modem production The machine-building industry produces various kinds of machinery and machine-tools/ to "meet the requirements of engineering branches as well as the Tight and food industries. The engineering industry is characterized by such features as increased capacities, and speeds of machinery, the replacement, of. mechanical control systems by electrical and hydraulic ones. It is characterized by simplification of machinery design, an increasing use of automatic devices and .the introduction of programmer control, techniques on a mass scale Automation of production means producing' {automatic and semiautomatic machinery^ machine-tools numerically, controlled machines based on microprocessors and microcomputers, installing transfer lines It is a key production for the building of the material and technical base of economy. What is automation? Shortly speaking, automation consists of four integral parts: transfer machines, automatic assembly, communication engineering and control engineering. There is difference between mechanization and automation. In automation the functions of control, maintaining machines are transferred to other machines while in mechanization these functions are transferred to the working mechanisms.

The body of the earth and its gravity field are subject to temporal variations of secular, periodic, and singular nature, which can occur globally, regional y, and locally. The geodetic measurement and evaluation techniques today have advanced to the extent that they can detect a part of this change. Should average conditions beascertained observations must be corrected for these changes. With the detection of a part of the variations, geodesy also contributes to the investigation of the dynamics of the terrestrial body. The figure of the earth and the external gravity field are accordingly conceived as time dependent gambles.

1.Read and translate the text CHLORINE

Because of its pronounced activity as a non-metal and its consequent tendency to combine with metals, chlorine is never found naturally in a free state. In the combined state, however, it is assumed to be one of the moderately abundant elements of the earth's crust Chemists consider its most abundant natural compounds to be the chlorides of certain metals. Of these, sodium chloride is estimated to be by far the most abundant.

Experiments showed chlorine to be only slightly soluble in water. Its density is stated to be almost two and one-half times that of the air, a litre under normal conditions weighing about 3.2140 grams. We know chlorine to be a typical non-metal. As such it resembles oxygen in some respects, but differs, in showing more pronounced activity in its reactions with metallic elements. Oxygen, on the Other hand, is found to display a somewhat greater tendency to react with non-metals,Absolutely 'лгу chlorine does not seem to attack metals; at least the reaction is extremely slow, Experiments prove chlorine to react with almost all of the non-; metals. The reaction of hydrogen and chlorine is exothermic.H2 + Cl2 = 2HC1 + 44000 We should expect, therefore, these two elements to combine very readily and the product to be. very stable. In the dark, however, hydrogen does not appear to combine with chlorine with appreciable velocity and reaction seems to require the presence of a catalyst In ordinary light the reaction is likely to take please slowly. But if the mixture were exposed to direct sunlight we could see the reaction occur violently.Since chlorine combines very readily with free hydrogen, we should expect it also to react with compounds containing hydrogen. This is really the case. Natural gas, for instance, which is blown to consist largely of methane (CH4) continues to bum when a lighted jet of the gas is introduced into a cylinder filled with chlorine, hydrogen chlorine arid free carbon being produced In bright sunlight a mixture of methane and chlorine both combines with and replaces hydrogen.
