7th Grade Diagnostic Test
Marcus Welby is a famous journalist. He writes for many important newspapers and magazines. But how did he become a journalist?
Marcus was a hard-working student at school and he passed all his exams. ‘Why don’t you become a dentist?’ said his dad. ‘It’s a challenging and well-paid job’ But Marcus didn’t want to spend all day looking at people’s teeth! ‘You like designing. What about becoming an architect?’ said his mum. But Marcus didn’t think it was the job for him.
When Marcus left school, he looked for a job. He couldn’t find anything interesting. ‘You mustn’t stop looking,’ said his mother. Then one day Marcus’s luck changed. He was reading the local newspaper when he saw an advertisement. It was for a job at the newspaper. ‘That’s it! I’m going to be a journalist!’ he thought.
Marcus went for an interview. The newspaper’s owner, Mr Bennett liked Marcus and gave him the job. In the beginning, Marcus had to do a lot of boring jobs. He made the tea, tidied the desks, cleaned the office, but he didn’t write any articles.
Then one day Mr Bennett said: ‘Today you must go to 17 Chester Road and interview Mrs Robinson. She won first prize at a flower show. Then you have to write an article about the show. The article mustn’t be more than 150 words.’
This was Marcus’s first article – it was boring and it wasn’t very good. ‘I couldn’t write well when I was young,’ says Marcus. ‘I had to write hundreds of articles before I became good.’
