The country is situated in the south-eastern part of Central Europe. It borders on the Russian Federation, Byelorussia, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Ukraine is one of the largest European countries. It covers the area of 604 000 square kilometers. The population of Ukraine is over 48 million people. There are people of different nationalities in it: Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, Byelorussians, Moldavians, Poles and others.
Ukraine is considered a land of remarkable beauty. Ukraine is famous for its extremely fertile black soil.Most part of Ukraine is flat and mountains make up only 5% of its territory. Mount Hoverla is in the Carpathians and it is the highest peak in the country. The Dnieper is the main river in the country. It is one of the longest rivers in the world. It divides the country into right-bank and left-bank Ukraine and flows south to the Black Sea. Besides the Dnieper there are the Dniester, the But, the Donets, which provide Ukraine with water. Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and has such important ports as Odessa, Mariupol, Nikolaev, Kerch and Kherson.
Like any other country Ukraine has big cities; among them are Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, Kharkiv, which used to be the capital of Ukraine and now it is an important industrial centre, Donetsk is a coal-mining and chemical centre and a lot of others.
From the point of view of its natural resources Ukraine is a rich country. It has 5% of the world’s mineral resources. It is rich in coal, oil, lead, iron ore, titanium, granite, marble and building materials. So Ukraine is an industrial and agricultural country.
Ukraine has got picturesque scenery and a temperate continental climate. It has cold winters with snow and warm summers.
Ukraine is famous for its forests with plantations of pine, oak, beech and birch. Most forests are in the Carpathians and Polissia.
Ukraine is the largest country in Europe.
