2.6. The USA Political Party Symbols
Each political party has its own symbol, an icon that sets them apart from other parties. Each symbol was chosen to give the assurance that when a person looks at it, they will instantly be filled with the ideals and goals of the party
Colors
Red - conservatives and the U.S. Republican party
Blue - liberals and the U.S. Democratic Party, has recently been associated with the Modern Whig Party.
Gold - libertarians and the U.S. Libertarian Party
Green - environmentalism, and often Liberalism, and the U.S. Green Party
Purple - politically mixed or moderate areas of the country, and the U.S. Moderate Party, more recently it has been used to represent the U.S. Constitution Party.
Buff - also heavily used to represent the Modern Whig Party along with blue. White - (sometimes) third parties (other than the Greens or Moderates) and independent candidates and voters
Icons
Abraham Lincoln - Republican Party, used on some paper ballots in US; also used as a fundraising symbol (such as with the party's annual "Lincoln Dinner" in many states). Also used by the Modern Whig Party due to Lincoln's loyalty to the original Whig Party.
Zachary Taylor - In some rare instances the Modern Whig Party has used the portrait of the 12th President of the United States in his military uniform to show their heritage as the old Whig Party and their connection with military veterans.
Donkey - Democratic Party. On January 15, 1870 a political cartoon by Thomas Nast appeared in Harper's Weekly titled "A Live Jackass Kicking a Dead Lion". This cartoon characterized the Democratic Party as a donkey for the first time. Since then, the donkey has become a symbol of the party, though unlike the Republican elephant, the donkey has never been officially adopted as the party's logo.
Dove - Anti-war activists. White dove with an olive branch - symbol of peace.
Elephant - Republican Party. As symbol of the Republican party, the elephant represented Nast’s political sentiments toward his own party, and also some of his despair that some of the qualities associated with that party seemed to be waning.
Statue of Liberty - Libertarian Party.
Sunflower - Green Party; Also used to represent Republican presidential candidate Alfred Landon of Kansas in 1936.
Torch - Conservative Party of New York
