Chandler is an American realist, writer and screenwriter, one of the founders, along with Dashiell Hammett and James Kane, of the "cool detective" genre, or as it is also called - the "noir" genre. The main character of Chandler's novels and short stories is private detective Philip Marlowe. The book "The Long Farewell" won the Edgar Allan Award for Best Novel of 1955. And Somerset Maugham wrote that the books of this writer will live for a long time, and that it is unlikely that Chandler will have a worthy rival in the detective novel genre in the near future. In the novel "The Long Farewell", the charming and noble detective Philippa Marlowe solves a crime committed out of jealousy. Committed – вчинений, скоєний. Worthy rival – гідний суперник. « The Long Goodbye » (1954) ------------------------------------------------------« Довге прощання » (1954)Marlowe, a private detective from Los Angeles, wakes up in the middle of the night in his bachelor apartment and goes to the store for cat food. On the way, he meets an old friend, Terry Lennox, who asks for a ride to the Mexican border for a good reward. When he returns home in the morning, he is arrested and charged with the murder of Lennox's wife. Three days later he is released: Lennox committed suicide in Mexico and the case of his wife's murder is closed. Knowing Terry well, the detective refuses to believe in his suicide and begins his own investigation. Bachelor apartment – холостяцький апартамент, квартира. Border – кордон. Refuses – відмовляється. The story's period was moved from 1949–50 to 1970's Hollywood.
