Name of the activity: ‘Upside down’
Age: 7-12
Aim: to practice vocabulary “Houses. Furniture” and grammatical constructions there is\ there are
Materials: posters, pencils, the pictures of furniture, the flashcards
Preparation:
1. Print the flashcards with the positive, negative and interrogative forms of the grammatical constructions there is \there are.
+ there is a…. there are some….
- there isn’t a… there aren’t any…
? Is there a….. Are there any……
2. Print and cut out the pictures of furniture so that they could be sticked.
Procedure:
1. The students are asked to work in groups. The task for them is to create \ to build the house of their dream. They should think about the number of floors, rooms they want to include.
2. The groups draw their houses. After it, the groups are asked to exchange their houses. The task is to present the house of another group using the grammatical construction there is \there are.
For example, the house of group A is very big. There are 3 floors in it. There is a kitchen, a living room, two bathrooms, four beds and a garage.
All the groups present the houses.
3. After it, the groups are given envelopes with a number of furniture and they are asked to make their houses as crazy as it is possible. They may stick a shower in the kitchen or a table in the bathroom or a bed in the dining room, to make it upside down.
4. The groups exchange their houses again and present them to the class using the same grammatical constructions. For example, there is a table in the kitchen, there are some pillows in the bathroom.
5. Finally, the teacher collects the projects and says which group has the most correct sentences. The students choose the craziest house of all.
What learning styles this activity addresses
For kinesthetic learners: choosing the furniture and ‘feeling’ it with their hands, drawing the houses
For visual learners: seeing the flashcards with there is\ there are, the pictures of the furniture, and the models of the houses
For auditory learners: students listen to the students presenting the projects and to the teacher giving the feedback.
Our comment:
The activity is very useful for all students. You cannot be good at English but you are good at drawing. There is a task for everybody. Students learn how to share the work, how to cooperate with each other. It is a good opportunity to practice grammar. All the learning styles will be delighted to take part in it.
