Halloween . Scenario of the party .
Professor Sprout : Hello to everybody
Professor McGonagal : We are glad to welcome you here ,
in the grand hall of Hogwarts School , the best School of
Witchcraft and Wizardry .What day is it today ? Do you
remember ?
Prof Sprout : Oh , yes . It is 31 October today and we have
gathered here to celebrate Halloween , one of the most
charming holidays of the year . It is a pity , but Albus Dumbledore , our headmaster , the greatest Wizard of all times
is absent . So my colleague , Professor McGonagal , and I ,
Professor Sprout , will help you to feel comfortable at
our party Prof McGonagal : So , our dear students , with what creatures
Do you associate Halloween ?
( Possible answers : ghosts , witches , black cats , goblins , demons , vampires , zombies , skeletons etc. )
Prof Sprout : In reality , some of you , especially the first-year
students are afraid of many things such as mice , spiders ,
darkness . But today we hope you will be afraid of nothing .
A SONG
Who is afraid of big black spiders ,
Big black spiders ,
Big black spiders ,
Who is afraid of big black spiders ?
We are not afraid of big black spiders ,
Big black spiders ,
Big black spiders ,
We are not afraid of big black spiders ,
No , no , not we .
Prof McGonagal : Can anybody explain the origin of magic that is inseparably connected with this holiday ?
Ss : Of course , we can . The ancient Druids who inhabited what we now call Great Britain divided the year into two seasons : a growing season and winter : Life and Death . Druids placed great importance on the passing one season to the next . Summer officially ended on October 31 . On that day people celebrated festival called Samhain , the Celtic New Year . And the day after Samhain was the first day of winter . Being between seasons , Samhain was considered a very magical time it was believered that the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead were weakened .
Prof Sprout :You are quite right . The ancient people feared that the disembodied spirits would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year . But do not be afraid . We , the teachers of Hogwarts , will not allow any strangers to be present at our party .
Prof McGonagal : Still , some spirits are present at our party . They have been living inHogwarts for so many year that we cannot imagine our life without them . They are Nearly Headless Nick , the Bloody Baron ( the words from the hall :
“ I am here “ ) , the Peeves , our Poltergeist .
Prof Sprout : Well , as Halloween is a fun day for kids and adults we will play some games . Do you see these syrup-coated scones , hanging up on strings ? You will have to eat them without using your hands .
Prof McGonagal : Now I have got a very simple question for you. Look around . What are the traditional colours of Halloween ? ( black and orange )
Prof Sprout : An orange colour… What does it remind me of ?
Oh, yes , a pumpkin . Have a look at this jack-o-lantern . Is not it funny ? By the way , who has made it ? (voices from the hall :
“ We have “ Then tell us how you have managed to create such a masterpiece .
Ss : It was not difficult . We chose a big orange pumpkin , cut the top of it , took out its contents , carved two eyes and a mouth- it was the most difficult piece of work . Then we took a candle and put it inside a hollow pumpkin .
Prof Sprout : Well done , well done . You will be surprised , but thanks to Professor Trelony the spirit of Jack is present at our party .
Jack : Hello to everybody . I am Jack . When I was alive and lived in Ireland I was a drunkard and trickster . When I died I was denied the entrance to Heaven and to Hell . Instead the devil gave me a single ember to light my way through the darkness .
The ember was placed inside a hollow turnip to keep it glowing longer . Since those times I have been wandering around the world with this lantern . And now I will tell you a story . It is as gloomy as my fate .
In the dark , dark wood
There was a dark , dark house
And in the dark , dark house
There was a dark , dark room
And in that dark , dark room
There was a dark , dark bookcase
And in that dark , dark bookcase
There was a dark , dark box
And in that dark , dark box there was a ghost .
Prof McGonagal : Poor Jack . And now meet the best student of Griffindor –Hermione Granger . She will prove once again that she is the best at Portions lessons .
Hermione Granger’ song :
Take three snake’ s teeth and four frog’ s legs ,
A tortoise’ s tail and eight ant’ s eggs ,
Say “Abracadabra , jim , jam , jel “
And now you’ve got a magic spell .
Take a black bat’ s ear and monkey’ s toes ,
A butterfly’ s eye and a rabbit’ s nose ,
Say “ Abracadabra , jim , jam , jel “ .
And now you’ve got a magic spell .
Prof Sprout : A brilliant student , a funny song . It’s time for fun again . Another interesting game we play at Halloween’ s night
Is bobbing for apples . Does anybody know the origin of this tradition ?
S1 : In 43 AD , the Roman Empire conquered the Celts . The Celtic festival of Samhain was adopted by the Roman invaders and was celebrated at the same time as a Roman celebration of the harvest . It was a day to honour Pomona , the Roman goddess of fruit and trees . The symbol of Pomona is the apple , which might explain the origin of this tradition .
Prof Mc Gonagal : We have filled a tub with water and put some apples there . You see they are floating on the surface . The players will bob for apples . They are not allowed to use hands .
Prof Sprout : Halloween Rap . Meet Harry Potter and Ronald Weasley .
Ha – ha – ha Halloween
Sing ha – ha – ha Halloween
It’s October
Thirty-one-
The time of year
To have some fun .
I’m a vampire ,
You are a ghost .
The time of the year
I love the most .
Wear a witch’ s hat ,
Wear a white sheet ,
Knock at the door ,
Play trick or treat .
Cut the pumpkin ,
Put in a light ,
No evil spirit
Can come tonight .
We’ve got chocolate ,
Sweets and cakes .
November one
I’ve got toothache
Prof McGonagal : I’ll mention one more tradition which has survived unchanged to this day . It’s very popular in Ireland
But in Hogwarts we observe it too . We call it baking . The elves
living at Hogwarts have made a big cake and placed a plain ring
In it before baking . Whoever finds this ring will find his or her true love next year . Now , help youselves .
Prof Sprout : So , who has got a ring ? Our congratulations !
Well , Halloween won’t be a real one without the tradition
of trick – or – treating . Meet Madam Hooch , the teacher of Flying . You will be delighted to know how she participated
in the celebration of this holiday when she was a girl . Ask her
questions .
Possible questions :
Prof McGonagal : The night has come . Before finishing our party I suggest sining a song .
A SONG
Twinkle , twinkle , little star ,
How I wonder what you are .
Up above the world so high
Like the diamond in the sky .
When the blazing sun is gone ,
When nothing shines upon ,
Then you show your little light
Twinkle ,twinkle , all the night .
