Consolidating new vocabulary games

 

1.   Making mind maps

This activity is good for reviewing lexical sets over several lessons.

How it works.

1. Write a mind map on the board like the one below with extra squares

2.  Ask the students to read the words in the box and write words linked to something you can buy in the shop.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Shout bingo!

This activity is good for practising matching spelling words and their written form.

How it works.

1. Choose a topic and ask the class for 10 words about the topic.

2. Write the words on the board.

3. Ask the students to copy any 5 words from the board into their notebooks.

4. Read out the words in any order and ask the students to tick any word that they hear.

5. The first student to reach 5 words shouts “Bingo!”

 


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. Jumble your words!

This activity is good for spelling practice.

How it works.

1. Write 8 words on the board with the letters in a different order.

2.  Give the students the name of the topic that you are revising.

3. Ask the students to work in pairs and to copy the words into their notebooks in the correct way in 5 minutes.

4. After 5 minutes, ask the students to go to the board and write their words and everyone can check their words.

Example: Topic – Food

4. What’s in the picture?

This activity is good for giving students practice in a meaningful context.

How it works.

1. Choose a topic and put some flashcards in a pile on the table.

2. Ask a student to choose a flashcard without showing it to the class.

3. Ask the class to guess the picture by asking “Is it a/an …?” or “Is there a/any…?”

4. When a student guesses the correct word, they change places with the student at the front of the classroom and the activity continues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. Where was it?

This activity is good for memorising new vocabulary and reviewing previous lessons.

How it works.

1. Choose a topic and some flashcards.

2. Draw some circles on the board one for each word.

3. Show each flashcard to the class and ask for the words one by one.

4. Write each word in a circle on the board.

5. When all the circles are full, ask the students to close their eyes.

6. Erase one word and leave the circle empty.

7. Ask students to open their eyes and guess which word is missing.

8. Continue the activity until all the circles are empty.

9. Ask students to try and remember all the words and write them in the correct circle.

 

6. Can you remember?

This activity is good for memorising new words.

 

How it works.

1. Choose a topic and some flashcards.

2. Show each flashcard to the class and ask for the word.

3. Stick the flashcards on the board one by one.

4. Write a list of the words on the board in any order. 

5. Make two teams of students standing in two lines facing the board.

6. Erase out one word and shout

“Go!”

7. The first student in each line goes go to the board and points to the correct flashcard.

8. The student who points first gets one point and the activity continues.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7. Board rush

This activity is good for spelling practice and checks the students’ understanding.

How it works.

1. Choose a topic and stick some flashcards on the board.

2. Make two teams of students standing in two lines facing the board.

3. Spell one of the words on the board.

4. The first student in each line goes to the board and slaps the correct flashcard.

5. The student who slaps first gets one point and the activity continues.

6. To make the activity more challenging, spell more and more quickly!

 

8. Noughts and crosses

 

This activity is good for students to use the target vocabulary in a meaningful sentence.

 

How it works.

1. Draw a grid with nine parts on the board like the one below and in each part write one word.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Ask the students to copy the grid into their notebooks and divide the students into pairs, A and B.

3.  Student A is “noughts”(o) and student B is “crosses” (X).

4. Student A starts by choosing a word on the grid and makes a sentence with it.  Example: I keep my fruit juice in the fridge.

5. If the sentence is correct, the student puts a nought in the square. 6. The first student to mark three squares in a row (across, down or diagonally) is the winner

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

9. It’s raining words!

This activity is good for revising word families and as a group formation activity.

How it works.

1. Put the students into pairs, A and B.

2. Give the students a topic and ask them to think about all the words they know about the topic.

Example: clothes

3. Student A says a word to student B and they both write it down.

4. Student B says a word to student A and they both write it down.

5. The activity continues until they can’t think of any more words.

6. Put two pairs together and ask them to share their words in the same way as before.

7. The winning team is the team with the most words!

 

10. Mix and match

This activity is good for saving time when pre-teaching vocabulary.

How it works.

1. Stick some flashcards on the right side of the board.

2. Write a list of the words on the left of the board in any order.

3. Ask students to go to the board individually and draw a line between the pictures and the words.

4. Check the answers with the whole class.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

11. What was the order?

This activity is good for students to recognise the pronunciation of words and listening practice.

 

How it works.

1.  Teach a set of new words and write them on the board in any order.

2.  Ask the students to copy the words into their notebooks.

3.  Read a little story with the words in it and ask the students to put the words in the correct order.

 

Example: wake up

                 work

                 go to bed

                 have breakfast

                 read a newspaper

 

Story:

Tony works in the evening.  He sometimes reads a newspaper at work. He goes to bed at 2 o’clock in the morning. He wakes up at 10 o’clock and has breakfast at lunchtime!

 

12. Word soup

This activity is good for spelling practice and revising lexical sets.

 

How it works.

1. Write a word square on the board

 similar to the one below

2. Give the students the topic and the number of hidden words.

 

Example: Topic – Animals

                  Number of animals – 5

3. Ask students to work in two teams and circle as many words as they can.
