Gardening
The most popular hobby of the British is gardening.
Most English people love gardens, their own above all, and this is probably one reason why so many people prefer to live in houses rather than flats.
In the suburbs you can see row after row of ordinary small houses.
And each house is surrounded by lots of flowers.
Many people who have no gardens of their own have patches of land.
They spend much leisure time working among their flowers, trees and vegetables.
The British take part in numerous flower-shows and vegetable shows with very good prizes.
Such shows are very popular in Britain.
To many gardeners the process of growing the plants and taking care of them seems more important than the pleasure of looking at the flowers or the prospect of eating vegetables.
In many places a competitive gardener’s desire is to grow the biggest cabbages or leeks or carrots.
So this is the most favourite hobby of the British people.
Task 2 – Listening
Plant a Tree on Arbor Day
Trees and other plants make our cities and towns nicer places to live. Some cities have special parks called botanical gardens. You can visit these parks and learn about different kinds of trees. Maybe you will see the kind of tree you would like to plant near your home. You can enjoy your tree all the year round. And so will some lucky birds.
Arbor Day is a special day in the USA. It is a day in spring for planting trees where there are no forests.
More than a hundred years ago a man by the name of Morton moved from New York State to the state of Nebraska. The State
of New York has many hills and woods of beautiful trees. Morton found the land in Nebraska very flat. There were very few trees, and he did not like it. Morton decided to plant trees. He asked his neighbours to plant some, too. They understood his idea and began to work.
Other people in Nebraska liked Morton’s trees. They decided to have one day when everyone would plant trees. They called it Arbor Day because an “arbor” is an old word for a “tree”.
Today, in Nebraska, the trees give the people cool shade in summer and protection from cold winds in winter. Most states in the United States have an Arbor Day. Most provinces in Canada have an Arbor Day, too
