II. 3. Listening and speaking
Teacher: I should say that our Kirovograd region is rich in many talented and famous people. One of them is Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi. He was a teacher and a writer. And today we are going to read some of his fairy-tales. But first, let us meet our special guest!
The children listen to Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi and watch a video.
Student1 (V. Sukhomlynskyi): Good afternoon, dear friends! My name is Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi. I was born on September 28th, 1918 in Vasylivka village. However, I worked and lived in the village of Pavlysh. I love foreign languages and I know English, French, Polish and some other languages. I am a teacher and a writer. I help my students to become brave and happy people. We spend much time together and often go to the river, to the forest, to the fields. I teach them to love nature and take care of it. I also wrote a lot of stories and fairy-tales for children. I think fairy-tales make the world of the childhood bright and interesting.
Teacher: Oh, thank you, very much Vasyl Oleksandrovych.
Now children, we`ve prepared some tasks to see how attentive you were. You should read the sentences about Vasyl Sukhomlynskyi and say if they are true of false. Be ready to give correct answers.
Power Point Presentation

True.

4. Reading and Speaking
-Pre-reading activities:
Teacher: Children, it`s time for a fairy-tale! Please, look at this picture; let us try to guess what our fairy-tale is going to be about.
The children look at the picture, the teacher writes down the ideas on the board.
(Prompting questions: Who is/are the main character(s)? What season is it in the picture? How does the Hair feel? What is he like? Is he polite/shy/brave/happy/wise? What happened to him?)
-Reading:
Teacher: Kids, our fairy-tale wants us to play a little. We need two teams ( green and yellow). Each of you will take a piece of paper and this way we can divide into teams.
Now, kids, look around. In the classroom you are to find five pieces of paper, they should be the colour of your team, as soon as you have found all the parts, you are to put them in the correct order to receive a fairy-tale.
Check students’s answers and read the fairy-tale in turns.
The Hare and the Rowan-tree
Once upon a time, there lived the Hare. He was clever, wise and polite.
The Hare liked to run across the fields and the forests, to play with his friends when the weather was fine and it was warm. But the winter had come. Everything was covered with snow. It was cold. There was nothing to eat. Once the Hare saw the Rowan-tree in the field near the river. There were many berries in it. But they were high-up in the Rowan-tree.
As the Hare was polite, he began to ask:
“Oh, Rowan-tree, be so kind as to give me some berries. I’m so hungry.”
And the Rowan-tree answered: “Ask the Wind. It will help you.”
So the Hare ran to the Wind and asked him: “Dear Wind, please, help me to have some berries.”
And the Wind began to shake the Rowan-tree. Many red berries fell on the snow.
The Hare was very glad to eat those berries. He ate them and thanked the Wind and the Rowan-tree.
-Post-reading activities:
Teacher: Now let us look at your answers when you were predicting the events of the fairy- tale and see if you were right.
(Read students’ answers and compare them with the events in the fairy-tale.)
Teacher: Kids, what is the main idea of the fairy-tale?
Students’answers
Teacher: Moral: It is very wise to be polite! And are you polite, kids?
Teacher: Now, children, I am going to read you one more story by Vasyl Sukhomlynsky. But it is not a usual story, this story has no end, it is unfinished. So, you are going to listen to the story and finish it! The story is called “The Most Joyful and the Saddest Things.”
The Most Joyful and the Saddest Things
The teacher told his students to draw the pictures of the most joyful and the saddest things. Mykola opened his notebook and thought. He remembered the golden summer, the mornings at the pond, the fields of flowers.
Then he took a pencil and drew a flower and a bee on the flower.
“It is the most joyful thing,” he said.
“Why?” asked the teacher.
“It is the most joyful thing because when it is summer the sun is shining, the sky lark is singing and the sky is blue.”
“And what will you draw the saddest?” the teacher asked.
Mykola took a pencil again and drew a tree. The yellow leaves were falling from the tree. It was raining.
“What is the saddest thing?” asked the teacher.
“The saddest thing is…”
Teacher: Let us finish the story.
Students’ answers
Teacher: On your desks you can find pieces of paper. There you can see two unfinished sentences:
Teacher: Complete the sentences and draw pictures to them. Our teachers and guests can also take part in this activity.
Check students’ answers.
III. Ending the lesson. Summary. Evaluation.
Homework: Make up four sentences about the most joyful and the saddest things and draw pictures to your sentences.
