Lesson outcomes:

By the end of the lesson the students will be able to:

-learn some information about a famous Ukrainian sportsman;

-practice the vocabulary on the topic;

-share their ideas and thoughts;

-work in groups;

- discuss the topic of healthy lifestyle;

I INTRODUCTION

Activity 1 WORD CLOUD

The teacher presents the word cloud and the students’ task is to guess a person they’re going to learn about and some other information connected with this person.

II MAIN PART

JIGSAW READING/GROUP WORK

The students are divided into two groups. Each group gets a piece of information about a specific period of a boxer’s life. Their task is to scan the text and learn the most important information. Then half of each group changes places with a half of another group and shares the information. At the end of the activity all students know the information about Usyk.

SPEAKING

-         to share ideas and thoughts about Oleksandr Usyk

The teacher prepares a cube with the words Why?  Explain…  Create…  Name…  Suggest…  Share... Each group in turns throws the cube and answers the teacher’s question beginning with the word on the cube.

Teacher’s questions:

Why do you consider Oleksandr Usyk to be a great Ukrainian sportsman?

Explain why Oleksandr Usyk refuses to exchange his Ukrainian citizenship for the Russian one.

Name famous Ukrainian boxers who helped Oleksandr Usyk become professional.

Create a list of competitions Oleksandr Usyk participated in.

 Share your thoughts about what personal traits are necessary to become a professional sportsman.

 Suggest the names of Ukrainian sportspeople who are famous all around the world.

WRITING/ THINK-PAIR –SHARE

How sport can help people be young and healthy.

Students work individually first, then in pairs, then as the whole group.
