Підтема: Київське метро. Контроль навичок читання “Curling”. 

Практичні задачі: організувати контроль навичок читання, організувати діалогічне мовлення учнів на основі діалогу-зразку.

Освітні задачі: перевірити рівень умінь учнів з читання, навчити узагальнювати отримані знання, залучати учнів до діалогу культур, розширювати філологічний кругозір учнів.

Розвиваючі задачі: розвивати прагнення вивчати іноземну мову, розвивати мислення, увагу, розвивати мовну здогадку та мовленнєву реакцію, розвивати готовність до іншомовного спілкування.

Виховні задачі: виховувати почуття самостійності та відповідальності, виховувати почуття колективізму, виховувати позитивне ставлення до культури іншого народу.

Today we’ll speak about the Ukrainian metro and make some dialogues about it. And I have a final test for you.  You’ll read a very interesting text about one kind of sport – curling. Your task will be to read the text and to do the tasks individually. Pay special attention to the exercise 1, because it is similar to the tasks of the final exam in the 11-th form. Read the text and do the tasks

Curling

1. Curling, born in Scotland in the first half of the 16-th century, was played in frozen ponds using simple stones. It is known since 1511. Examples of this sport can also be found in the paintings of Flemish artists. In the 17-th century players started to use suitably treated stone discs and sticks to sweep the snow. Since 1775 the game has become popular in Northern America, where it was introduces by immigrants.
2. The first Olympic Winter Games curling tournament was held at Chamonix in 1924. After Lake Placid in 1932, curling was absent from the Olympic programme for 50 years; it appeared again as a demonstrative at Calgary in 1988. It was reinstated as a competitive discipline at Nagano in 1998. That year the men’s event was won by the Swiss team and Canada won the gold in the women’s.
3. Curling is a team game that is performed on a frozen pitch, the concept of which is very similar to bocce (traditionally played balls on natural soil or asphalt courts). It consists of sliding 19.92 kg blocks of stone (called rocks) which have a handle so that they stop as close as possible to the centre of a target drawn on the ice (called the house).
4. Each team consists of four players. The lead is the one that makes the first throw. The second is a good point maker, but also good at taking off the opponents stones that are in the way. The third is faced with a more tricky game. The fourth player, the skip, is the most experienced player, who devises tactics, advises his teammates on each throw and throws last.

Greg: Hello, Pete!

Pete: Hello, Greg!

Greg: Are you ready to visit a metro in Kiev?

Pete: Oh, yes I think it will be interesting.

Greg: First, let’s buy some tickets.

Pete: How much does it cost?

Cashier: Five hryvnas.

Pete: Give us two, please.

Greg: Here is the train.

Pete: Let’s sit down, quickly.

Greg: The train is modern and the sits are cosy.

Pete: Yes and the atmosphere is hospitable too.

Greg: You know, that metro is the fastest way to get somewhere in Kiev.

Pete: Really, I think that the fastest is by bus.

Greg: And it is the cheapest.

Pete: I think that the cheapest is by trolleybus.

Greg: Listen, our station will be the next. Be ready!

Pete: Yes, let’s come close to the exit.

Greg: We are at the Independence square now.

Pete: It takes us ten minutes. So it’s better to see the sights of Kiev with the help of metro. Do you agree?

Greg: Yes, I am absolutely agree with you.

• Do you understand the dialogue? Let’s translate some words and phrases into Ukrainian, but do it very quickly.
• Let’s divide into two teams and dramatize it.
