Medical institutes and clinical institutions of the city successfully combine their practical doctoring activity with research work.

Kharkiv hospitals can accommodate some 22 thousand of patients. At the disposal of the city dwellers and the visitors there is a reliable network of chemist's shops. Treatment and prophylactics ofdiseases are also carried out in sanatoriums that are situated in picturesque areas of the region famous for their healthy water and air.

Kharkiv retains its long-standing theatrical traditions that have not been forgotten up to the present day. There are seven theatres in the city now.

The musical life of Kharkiv is closely connected with the activity of the State academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after M. Lysenko. Famous Ukrainian and foreign singers and dancers have already performed on the stage of its new halls that can seat 2000 spectators.

Kharkiv has six museums the most popular of which are the Museum of History, the museum of Fine Arts and the museum of Natural History.

Among the numerous libraries of the city (88) the principal one — State Scientific Library named after V. Korolenko — is a real treasure house of knowledge. Its shelves house over 6,5 million of books.

There are more than 200 kindergartens, nursery schools and other pre-school facilities that provide for interesting and diverse leisure activities of the children. There has been instituted an international fund for supporting talented young people.

The favourite places where Kharkivites like to have their rest are the Shevchenko town garden, the City Park named after M. Gorky with its numerous entertainment facilities, the forest park, and the Zoo.

All the necessary facilities are provided in the city for sports activities. There are 17 stadiums, 775 sports grounds, 341 gyms, over 100 football fields, 23 swimming pools.
