TRAVELING TO LONDON. FORM 7.

Aim to present vocabulary related to materials and read for specific information, to read for gist, to consolidate new vocabulary through antonyms, to consolidate information in a text, to develop critical thinking skills, to write about an unusual building in your country, to raise cultural awareness.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the lesson children will be able to

-make up dialogues

-describe geographical position of Great Britain

-complete the diologues

-speak about the unusual buildings

Lesson procedure:

  • Introduction.Greeting.

-Hello, children. I am glad to see you. How are you today? Today we are going to travel to London. Are you ready? Let’s start.

  • Warm up.

Look at the map/ Tell me, please what country is it?

  • Main part.

Look at our smartboard. Let’s read and translate the sentences.

 This is Great Britain. It consists of four countries - Wales, Britain, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is washed by the Atlantic Ocean,  the English Channel, The Strait  of Dover. The west of the country is washed by the Irish Sea, the east coast is washed by the North Sea.

The capital of Great Britain is London. It is a political, cultural and financial city. The population of  London is over 8 million people. London is on the Thames river. London consists of four main parts-the City, Westminster, the East End and the West End.

The City is a financial part of London. Many banks and offices are located there. Nobody lives in the City.

Westminster is a historical area. Famous monuments and museums are situated there.

The West End is the richest part of London. The most famous and interesting places  can be found there.

There are a lot of plants and factories in the East End. It is industrial part of London.

 Now we are going to read the text and match the headings (A_D) to the paragraphs (1-3). One heading is extra.

The Gherkin.

1 30 St Mary Axe or else “The Gherkin” is one of the tallest skyscrapers in London. It is the latest addition to the city’s skyline. It has got 41 floors and the tower is over  180 metres tall. It  is a modern steel and glass building. The building is covered-shaped with flat diamond-shaped windows.

2. Inside there are two high-speed lifts that can carry 378 people at the same time and can travel at speeds of up to 6 metres per second. There is also a fancy restaurant on the top floor. It is the highest restaurant on the top floor. It is the highest restaurant in London at 163 metres with spectacular views of the city.

3. The Gherkin is environmentally friendly. It has got curved stairwells that allow the air  to flow naturally through the building. The windows also make use of the natural light. This saves a lot of energy. Due to its unique design the Cherkin has won a number of awards for architecture.
