Goodbye Winter. Welcome

Spring.

Compere: Good day! Dear friends, glad to see you at our English party. Sure, you are energetic and active persons who love English very much. Am I right? OK. Do you like to learn poems, sing songs? I am sure you do. Today you are going to show some of your abilities in out of class activities: singing, reciting poems and demonstrating your knowledge on the topic “Holidays and Seasons”.

Pupil: Do you remember what season it is now? How many seasons are there in the year? Let’s meet them!

(The seasons of thee year with their months represent themselves reciting the poem)

Year: Thirty days has September,

               April, June and November.

               February has 28 alone

And all the rest have 31

Except leap year, that’s the time

              When February days are 29.

Months: January with cold is set.

                     February is chill and wet,

                     March wind often rages,

In April the weather often changes.

                     Pretty flowers come in May,

                    Sunny June brings longest day.

In hot July the skies are clear,

Then August with corn is here.

For fruit September opens the way.

                    October sweeps the leaves away,

                    Next enters grey November

                    And, lastly snowy December.

(The months leave the hall)

Dramatizing  the poem “Who Loves the Trees Best?”

                     Who loves the trees best?

                     “I”, said the Spring.

                     “Green beautiful leaves

                     To them I bring”.

                     Who loves the trees best?

                     “I”, Summer said.

                     “I give them flowers,

                     White, pink and red”.

                      Who loves the trees best?

                      “I”, Autumn said.

                                                        1

                    “I give them ripe fruit

                    Golden and red”.

                    Who loves the trees best?

                    “I love them best”,

                    White Winter answered,

                    “I give them rest”.

Compere: What is your favourite season? Why?

Pupil: My favourite season is winter because we have holidays, we can sledge, ski, make a snowman, play snowballs, sing carols at Christmas.

Compere: Winter, where are you? Are you here? We want to say goodbye to you!

Winter: Thanks, I’m  the coldest season of the year. My months are December, January and February. When I come, all the rivers and lakes are frozen. The ground, the trees and the houses are covered with deep snow. The sun rises later and sets earlier then in summer. But when it sends its rays to the earth, everything sparkles like diamonds. You’ll never see such a wonderful picture in any other season. Children sledge, skate, ski, play hockey, make snowman or go for walks in the woods. They are fond of winter. They like winter holidays – New Year, Christmas.

Pupils: The snow is falling,

                  The wind is blowing,

                  The ground is white

                  All days and night.

December is the best of all.

                  Snowflakes dance, snowflakes fall.

                  People see New Year in,

When December ends, it will begin.

This is the season when children ski,

                  And Father Frost brings

                  The bright New Year Tree.

It is winter, it is cold.

                  Father Frost is very old.

But he is always full of joy

And glad to give me a nice toy.

Pupil: New Year’s Day has been one of the main holidays of the year for a long time. Different people celebrate New Year’s Day at different times, have different traditions. But giving presents and sending greetings with good wishes are very popular in all countries. “Happy New Year”, “Best wishes for a happy New Year!” say or write people to each other.

Pupil: In Ukraine we decorate New Year’s tree on January, 1. People decorate their flats with the New Year’s trees. Children have the New Year’s parties at their schools.

They sing songs, recite poems, play games and dancer around the New Year’s tree.

After New Year’s Day pupils have their winter holidays. Besides we celebrate the old New Year – January, 14.

                                                             2

Pupil: The Christmas tree is one of the most dominant symbols of the Christmas seasons all over the world. The decorated and fully lighted Christmas tree has an aura in itself. It fills the air with warmth, love and happiness that are the symbols of the holiday. The tradition of decorating a holiday tree has played an important part in winter celebrations for many centuries. In Northern Europe the Vikings considered the evergreen tree to be a symbol and a reminder that darkness and cold of winter would end and the green of spring would return. The Druids of ancient England and France  decorated oak tree with fruit and candles to honour their god of harvest.

Pupil: Christmas is connected with the birth of Christ and it is the holiday of all the Christians. English people celebrate Christmas on 25 December and in Ukraine we celebrate it on 7 January. We prepare 12 national dishes for this holiday. Kutia is our traditional dish. And we know a lot of songs about New Year and Christmas.

                             Competition of songs.

Compere: Now we have a competition of songs. Your task is to sing as much songs about winter and New Year or Christmas as you know.

( “Deep in the Wood the Tree Was Born”, “Oh, Christmas Tree”, “Snow is Falling”, “We Wish You a Happy New Year”, “Jingle Bells”, “Auld Lang Syne”, “A Happy New Year To You” etc.)

Pupil: St Valentine’s Day is a day for sweethearts. You can send candies or roses, the flowers of love to someone.

                                         Sealed With a Kiss

Though we’ve to say goodbye to the summer,

Darling, I promise you this –

I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter

                 Sealed with a kiss.

Yes, it’s gonna be a lonely summer,

                 And I feel the emptiness

I’ll send you all my dreams every day in a letter

                 Sealed with a kiss.

                 I’ll see in the sunlight,

                 I’ll hear your voice everywhere,

I’ll run to tenderly hold you,

But, darling, you won’t be there.

I don’t want to say goodbye to the summer

                 Knowing the love I’ll miss.

So let us make a pledge to meet in September

And seal it with a kiss.

Yes, it’s gonna be a cool, lonely summer

                 But I feel the emptiness,

I’ll send you all my love every day in a letter

Sealed with a kiss. Sealed with a kiss.

                  Sealed with a kiss.

(The girl-spring with a basket of “flowers” comes in).

                                                              3

Spring: Hi! How are you, children? Happy to see you here. Do you like riddles? I see. Listen to me:

                    This is the season

                    When birds make their nests.

This is the season we like best.

This is the season when snowdrops bloom,

When nobody likes to stay in the room.

What season is it? (It’s spring)

Spring: What spring flowers do you know? (Lilies, daisies, marigolds, camomiles, roses, snowdrops, violets, daffodils, jasmine etc.). some of the flowers are in my basket. They are magic. Who loves Mummy best? Who wants to present her fliwers on 8 March? Come to me, please. Take a flower with a task, do it and give the flower to your mother.

(Seven pupils come to Spring, take cards-flowers, do tasks by themselves or make up a group of their friends if it is necessary).

Spring: While some of pupils are doing their tasks let’s look for “Flowers for Mummy” in the crossword. Find the names of the flowers. (Two teams find the words).
