The six and a half centuries between the end of Roman rule and the Norman Conquest are among the most important in English history. This long period is also

one of the most challenging to understand – and it has traditionally been labelled the ‘Dark Ages’.

When Anglo-Saxons first came to Britain they were pagans

(язичники). Pagan Anglo-Saxons worshipped many gods who they believed controlled the weather, crop growing and war. Anglo-Saxons believed in magic The Anglo-Saxons were very superstitious

(забобонні). They believed in magic spells and even dragons. They thought that potions, stones and jewels would protect them from evil

spirits and sickness. Over time the Anglo-Saxons became Christians after the Pope sent over a monk called Augustine form Rome to convince them to become christians.

 The fusion of Germanic Anglo-Saxon,

Celtic and Late Antique techniques and motifs, together with the requirement

for books, created the Hiberno-Saxon style, or Insular art (острівне

мистецтво), which is also seen in

illuminated manuscripts and some

carved stone and ivory, probably mostly drawing from decorative metalwork motifs, and with further influences from

Ring (775-850) the British Celts of the west and the Franks.
