Charlotte Bronte“Jane Eyre”

Charlotte was an English novelist and poet. Born: April 21, 1816, Thornton, England. Charlotte had five siblings, four sisters Maria, Elizabeth, Emily, Anne and brother Branwell . She was the 3rd child. When their mother died of cancer on 15 September 1821,they were left to the care of her sister, Elizabeth Branwell.

In 1824, when Charlotte was eight years old, her father sent her with Emily, Maria, and Elizabeth to the Clergy Daughters’ School. The school’s poor conditions affected their health, Maria and Elizabeth died of tuberculosis in June 1825. Their father removed Charlotte and Emily from the school. Charlotte wrote her first known poem at the age of 13 in 1829, and went on to write more than 200 poems in the course of her life.

1833-1838 she worked as a teacher1839 – she started working as a governess, but didn’t enjoy it. The sisters wanted to set up a school, but it wasn’t successful. In 1845 the sisters self-published the joint collection of poems under their assumed names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell. Only 2 copies were sold. Charlotte’s first manuscript, The Professor, was rejected nine times 1847 –Jane Eyre was published. It became very popular.

“Shirley” was published in 1849 and deals with themes of industrial unrest and the role of women in society. Her third novel, “Villette”, which was the last published in her lifetime, was published in 1853. 1848-1849 her brother and sisters died.1854 she got married. She died on 31 March 1855along with her unborn child.

Jane Eyre. Originally published as Jane Eyre: An Autobiography. It was published under her pen name Currer Bell. It tells the story of a plain governess , Jane, who, after difficulties in her early life, falls in love with her employer, Mr Rochester. They marry, but only after his insane first wife dies in a dramatic house fire. This novel is written in first person.
