The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated in Europe, on the British Isles. It is an island country. There are also about 2000 smaller islands. The English Channel separates the country from the continent. The country consists of four parts: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
London is the capital of Great Britain. It is one of the biggest cities in Europe.London is an important political centre; it is the seat of the British Parliament and the British Government. This city is an important industrial centre; in London there are many factories and plants.London is one of the oldest cities in Europe; it was founded by the Romans in the first century AD on the bank of the River Thames
While visiting the Houses of Parliament, the tourists like to see the famous clock, which is called Big Ben. The clock was built in 1854. It has four faces and a very big and loud bell. The bell weights 13 tons.In 1857 Parliament had a special sitting to decide how to call the bell. In the end the members of Parliament decided to name the bell after Sir Benjamin Hall, who was in charge of the building. Sir Benjamin was a very tall man and people called him Big Ben. So they called the bell Big Ben.
Buckingham Palace, the residence of the Queen of England. This is a beautiful building which stands in large gardens. In Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s picture gallery. The gallery, the palace and the gardens are open to visitors several days a week. The changing of the guards in front of Buckingham Palace is a colorful ceremony, because the guardsmen still wear the uniforms of the 19th century. Every day people come to see the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace. Groups of tourists stand around and take photographs. The guards are changed every hour. When the flag is flying on the top, the Queen is in the palace.
Trafalgar Square, one of the most famous squares in London. Trafalgar Square is so named in commemoration of the victory that the British Navy under the command of Admiral Nelson won over the French in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.A 5-metre statue of Admiral Nelson stands on top of a 44-metre column so as to allow him a view of the sea. The column stands in the geographical centre of London.
Westminster Abbey is the Royal church. It is situated near the Houses of Parliament and is one of the oldest churches in London. Also there are tombs of many English kings and queens, and memorials to many famous statesmen, writers and scientists. In Westminster Abbey are buried Newton, Darwin, and Watt. In the Abbey is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
One of the principal sights of London is the Palace of Westminster. This palace is situated on the left bank of the Thames near Westminster Bridge. The Palace of Westminster is the official name of the Houses of Parliament. The palace was first built in the twelfth century and rebuilt in 1840-1867, and it looks very ancient. The building has two high towers – the Clock Tower and the Victoria Tower.
Saint Paul's Cathedral is one of the finest historical buildings of London. This Cathedral is the greatest work of England's greatest architect, Sir Christopher Wren. The Cathedral was built in 1675. It was opened in1697but was finished only in 1710,when Wren was almost eighty years old. There are memorials to many famous men of England in the Cathedral.
London has several spacious parks at its centre, for example, Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, St.James Park and Green Park. The parks primary role is as a peaceful refuge for people living, working in or visiting central London and they are particularly popular for sunbathing and picnics in fine weather.
London's parks are the most beautiful areas of the city. Saint James’s Park is the most ancient of royal parks. In summer you can sit there by the side of the lake and listen to the band playing music. Another very interesting natural park is Hampstead Heath, from which there is a very good view of the whole of London. Regent’s Park is the right place to go if you like animals. Here you can feed the ducks and watch the pelicans. Hyde Park was once part of a forest. In our days ,Speaker’s Corner of the park is always a centre of activity. Public debates are held there nearly every day.
