Swift’s masterpiece “Gulliver’s Travels” appeared in 1726. His satire made a great sensation. In “Gulliver’s Travels” Swift satirized the evils of the existing society in the form of fictional travels. It describes the adventures of a ship’s surgeon and is divided into four parts , or four voyages: A Voyage to Lilliput;A Voyage to Brobdingnag( a voyage to the land of giants);A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibargi, Luggnagg, Glubdubdrib and Japan ( a voyage to a flying island);A Voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms(a voyage to the ideal island)

1. A Voyage to Lilliput. After being shipwrecked, Gulliver gets safely ashore and finds himself in a strange country inhabited by a race of people about 6 inches high. (15 cm)By making them so small Swift stresses their insignificance and shows contempt for their ideas, customs and institutions. Swift mocks at their Emperor, who boasts that he is the delight of the universe. This small country with its shallow interests, corrupt laws and evil customs symbolizes England of the 18th century.

2. A Voyage to Brobdingnag. Later Gulliver undertakes another voyage . The ship meets a terrible storm and Gulliver finds himself on the land of the giants. They are good-natured creatures and treat Gulliver kindly, though they are amused by his small size and look upon him as a play thing. Brobdingnag is the ideal place for Swift, ruled by a clever and honest Emperor.

3. A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibargi, Luggnagg, Glubdubdrib and Japan Describing Gulliver’s voyage to Laputa, a flying island, Swift attacks monarchs whose policy brings nothing but suffering to their subjects. The king of Laputa doesn’t think about his people at all, except when he has to collect taxes from them. The flying island helps the king to suppress rebellions.

4. A Voyage to the country of the Houyhnhnms. After five months at home, Gulliver leaves his children and pregnant wife yet again to go on his fourth voyage, this time as captain. Not long into the trip, his crew mutinies, locking him into his cabin and threatening to murder him. Eventually the crew, who plan to become pirates, drop Gulliver off on an unknown island. Gulliver walks inland until he comes across a field of strange creatures. They are animal-like humans. Gulliver later learns they are called Yahoos. The country is ruled by wise horses called the Houyhnhnms. It is the ideal country where there is neither sickness, dishonesty , nor any of the frivolities of human society.
