London Sights

Welcome to London Sightseeing Tour. As you know, London is one of thelargest cities in the world. It’s morethan two thousand years old. This city is famous for its sights. You’llsee Tower Bridge, Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of. London, Westminster Abbey, the. British Museum, National Gallery,St. Paul’s Cathedral, London Eye ,Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and other places of interest.

The River Thames. London is situated upon both banks of the River Thames. It consists of three parts: the City of London, the West End and the East End.

The Tower It was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William Conqueror. It was used as a fortress, a royal palace and aprison.

The Houses of Parliament The building in which the British Parliament sits. The present Houses of Parliament were built between 1840 – 1867.

Big Ben. The Clock Tower is the symbol of London, known as ‘’Big Ben’’

Westminster Abbey. It ‘s the crowning and burial place of Britishmonarchs. It has its world famous Poet’s Corner with memorials to Chaucer, Kipling. Shakespeare and other leading writers. Many outstanding people are buried here: Newton, Darwin, Dickens and others.

The Tower Bridge. One of London’s best known landmarks. It is over the River Thames near the Tower of London and the last bridge before the sea.

Buckingham Palace. The Palace is the official home of the British royal family. When the flag is flying on the top, the Queen is at home. This palace contains almost 600 rooms.

Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is named so in Commemoration of Nelson’ s greatvictory. In the middle stands the famous Nelson Column with the statue of Nelson 170 feet high so as to allow him a view of the sea. The column stands in the geographical Center of London.

The British Museum. It’s the national museum of Britain, founded in 1753. It has one of the world’s best collections of art and archaeological treasures.

Piccadilly Circus. This square is a well-known road junctionin central London. It’s such a focal point on special occasions,such as a Coronation or on New Year’s Eve.

National Gallery. The National Gallery in London was founded in 1824 and houses a rich collection of over 2300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900 in its home on Trafalgar Square. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the main collection is free of charge.

St. Paul’s Cathedral St. Paul’s Cathedral is the oldest and the most famous places of London. This Sir Christopher wren’s masterpiece stands on a site occupied by several predecessors, the last of which perished in the Great Fire of London in 1666. The building of the present Cathedral commended in 1675 and thelast stone was laid in 1710. It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in theworld.

London Eye The Merlin Entertainments London Eye is an extraordinary piece of engineeringdesigh and architecture. Since opening in March 2000 The London Eye has become an iconic landmark and a symbol of modern Britain. It is the tallest cantilevered observation wheel in the world. Its height is 135 metres and weighs over 2000 metric tonnes.
