Exercise 1

1 wasn’t: In the if clause of second conditional sentences, we need the verb to be in the past tense, and here it needs to be negative. So she’s shy becomes she wasn’t shy in the second sentence.

2 didn’t like: In the if clause, the verb must be in the past tense, and here it needs to be negative. So I like in the first sentence becomes I didn’t like in the second sentence.

3 would go: In this part of the sentence, we need would. Would is always followed by the infinitive without to.

4 she had: In the if clause, we need the verb to be in the past tense, and here it needs to be affirmative because the verb in the first sentence is negative. So she doesn’t have becomes she had.

5 wasn’t: The is in the first sentence becomes past in the second sentence, in the negative.

6 I were: We use the expression if I were you when we want to give advice to someone.

7 wouldn’t: We need something that means the same as hates in the first sentence – wouldn’t like.

8 I lost: The main verb is lose. In the if clause it needs to be in the past, so it becomes lost.

Exercise 2

1 was: In the if clause, we need the verb in the past.

2 wouldn’t be: In this part of the sentence, we use the negative form of would + infinitive.

3 became: In the if clause, we need the verb in the past.

4 were: In the if clause, we need the verb in the past.

5 Would Mark like: In this part of the question, we need would + infinitive.

6 had: In the if clause, we need the verb in the past.

7 would get: In this part of the sentence, we need would + infinitive.
