We live in Ukraine. Ukraine is a sovereign state. It has its own territory, government, national emblem, state flag and anthem. The geographical position of Ukraine is very favorable for the development of its relations with the countries of Europe, as well as with the countries throughout the world. It borders on Russia, Belarus, Moldova, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania. It is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The major rivers are the Dnieper, the Dniester, the Donets and others. The territory of Ukraine consists mostly of plains. The Ukrainian Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains make up only 5 % of its area.

It is a well-developed industrial and agricultural country. Ukraine has many natural resources. The population of Ukraine is about 50 million people. The biggest cities are Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Odesa, Lviv, Mykolaiv and others. Ukraine has an ancient history. It has its own original culture and arts. Over recent years people of Ukraine display a keen interest in the Ukrainian history and cultural heritage.

Nowadays Ukraine has established new relations with the countries throughout the world. Ukraine is one of the members of the United Nations Organization (UNO) and participates in the work of many international organizations. Scientists of Ukraine have made a great contribution to the world science.

Text 2

 

My name is Jane and my hobby is painting. I like to paint animals and flowers, but I’m not good at painting people. Most of all I enjoy painting

the places I visit. My parents and I often go for excursions to other towns and visit different famous places.

 My parents use a camera to take photos but I think that to have a picture which you have painted yourself is more interesting.

When I come home after each excursion, I bring my pictures to school to show them to the classmates and the teachers. Everybody likes them and they say I’ll become a famous artist in the future. Last year I took part in the competition of young painters of our town and won it. My parents were proud of me and my teacher of Art presented me wonderful paints.

There are so many museums and galleries in London that even people who have lived there for a long time do not know them all. Some are traditional museums, but many are now making their exhibitions interactive to encourage people to touch and under­stand what is on display. At the Science Museum, visitors can carry out experiments. At the National History Museum, visitors can find out how to look for fossils on the beach. At the National Gallery, the country’s main art gallery, visitors can call up paint­ings on computer screens, find out about them and then print out a plan with their location indicated. The Clink Prison Mu­seum is a reconstruction of an old prison. At the Museum of the Moving Image, almost all the things on display move. You can see how the first film was made, listen to the latest stereo systems and watch the news from the 1960s. You can design your own cartoons, read the news on TV and fly like Superman over London.
