The Mitten

Once upon a time an Old Man

Went to the forest and lost his mitten.

It was the beginning of an interesting story.

Are you ready to listen?

It was a cold winter day.

It was snowing heavily.

A little Mouse was walking –

She wasn’t singing happily.

It was so cold

That the Mouse froze.

“Ooooh, I am so cold,

I cannot feel my nose.

I wish there was something

To keep me warm…”

Suddenly she saw a mitten.

“I love it. Let it be my home!”

The mitten was very small.

It was just right for the Mouse.

She stayed there,

In her tiny house.

It had only been a little while,

A Frog came hopping up.

She stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“I am the Mouse. And who are you?”

“I am the Frog. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Jump in!”

It had only been a little while,

A Rabbit came scurrying up.

He stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“We are. The Mouse.

The Frog.  And who are you?”

“I am the Rabbit. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Jump in!”

It had only been a little while,

A Fox came scampering up.

She stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“We are. The Mouse.

               The Frog.

The Rabbit. And who are you?”

“I am the Fox. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Come in!”

It had only been a little while,

A Wolf came stalking up.

He stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“We are. The Mouse.

               The Frog.

               The Rabbit.

The Fox. And who are you?”

“I am the Wolf. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Come in!”

It had only been a little while,

A Bear came lumbering up.

He stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“We are. The Mouse.

               The Frog.

               The Rabbit.

               The Fox.

The Wolf. And who are you?”

“I am the Bear. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Get in!”

It had only been a little while,

A Boar came sauntering up.

He stopped and called out:

“Who is living in this hut?”

“We are. The Mouse.

               The Frog.

               The Rabbit.

               The Fox.

               The Wolf.

The Bear. And who are you?”

“I am the Boar. Please let me in!”

“Well the mitten is very small.

But it’s cold. All right. Climb in!”

So the Boar squeezed in.

It could be the end of a story:

The mitten was very small

But there was a place for everybody.

It had only been a little while,

The Old Man came walking up.

He saw the mitten move,

And bang! – he fired his gun!

The mitten burst

And the seven friends ran away.

This story is quite old

But it’s popular today!
