Family Relationships
How could you describe the word "family"? First of all, "family" means a close unit of parents and their children living together. However, we should not forget that it is a most complex system of relationships.
When do people usually start a family? This question does not have a definite answer. In the 18th, 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century people used to get married at the age of 18 or even 16. Despite the fact that the girl was so young, she was already able to keep the house, take care of her husband and raise children. However, life is changing as well as people's style of life. Nowadays we have much more freedom in questions concerning family. It is natural to get married at the age of 20 up to 30; however, some people prefer to make a career first and only after that start a family when they are already in their forties. Now you see why people in the 21st century do not hurry to get married.
3. Answer the questions: (Робота в групах, обговорювання)
1. Is your family big or small?
2. Have you got any siblings?
3. Is your family important for you?
Introduce your family.
Pupil:
My family is not large we are four. I have a father, a mother and a brother. We all live together in a new flat. My father is 45. He is a tall and well-built man with short black hair and grey eyes. He is quiet and hardworking. Really, he is a bread maker of the family. Dad is handy with many things. His hobby is fixing everything at home. My mother is very lively. She is life and soul of the family. She is a pleasant woman of forty with beautiful chestnut hair and dark brown eyes. She is a lofty ideal for me.
My parents have been married for 20 years, they have much in common, and in every day’s life, Dad is impractical and needs mother to look after him. Parents have different views on music, books, and films. For example, my father likes horror films. My father is a football fan and Mum does not like sports. Nevertheless, they try to have the same opinion about the education and upbringing of their children. My brother is only 11. He goes to school. He is funny and curious. He is constantly asking many questions often-silly ones. We all feel happy when we are together.
In the evenings, we often have little gatherings in the kitchen by the cup of tea, chatting, laughing and discussing the events of the day. Those evening are the best of all. However, sometimes I have problems with my parents. They do not like the clothes I wear the music I listen to and the friends I bring home. It is not easy to be a teenager.
In summer, I visit my Granny. I love her when I was a child she used to tell me fairytales and stories of her life. My parents are hardworking. They combine work with housekeeping. Mum manages our household very well. We all are in the habit of helping her to run the house. Our relatives and friends like to come to our place. My parents are very hospitable everybody feels at home in their flat.
Teacher: Are there any traditions in your family?
Pupil:
The family is an important part of my life. Of course, in every family, there are some unique traditions. From my point of view, it is important to have special traditions in a family because it makes family members closer and helps to make better relations between children and their parents.
In my family, there are some traditions. The greatest one is to spend the whole Saturday together. My parents work hard and very often they have to work overtime that is why we do not have enough time to spend with each other during the working day. Every Saturday we go somewhere together. When the weather is good, we go for a walk in the park. Sometimes we go to the cinema or to the theatre. In the evening, we have dinner together. My mom cooks something delicious. Every Sunday we do a big cleaning. For my family it is important to keep the house clean. It creates a cozy atmosphere in it that is why I always try to help my parents with cleaning.
I believe that in every family it is very important to spend time together. I am sure that family traditions make family members closer.
Teacher: How do you get on with your family: well or badly?
Relationships between parents and children
(подання нового лексичного матеріалу)
Pupil: As for me, I get on well with my parents. I know that thousands of young people run away from their homes each year, because they do not get on with their parents well. Every day I can talk with my mother about everything, because she is young too. In addition, she knows my problems as well as her own. Mother always gives me necessary, correct advice. Many parents are busy, but my mother helps me at any time. I have some friends, whose parents treat them unfairly as small children, but my mum treats me as the adult, as the equal. I clean my room myself - this doesn’t do my mother. She always says “Go and clean your room tidy.” I consider, that my relationships with my mum are very good, which is especially rare at this time.

How to Make Parents Listen?
As most of us know, talking and listening do not go smoothly every time. ….and past experiences can get in the way. Will parents take you seriously, believe what they say, listen to and ………………. your opinions, and hear you out without interrupting? A lot depends on your parents. But some of what happens depends on you, too. Since…………. is a two –way street, the way you talk can influence how well a parent listens and understands you.
Be as … as you can about what you think, feel and want. Give details that can help your parents understand your situation.
Be…………. . If you are always honest, a parent will be likely to believe what you say. If you sometimes hide the truth or add too much drama, parents will have a harder time believing what you tell them.
Try not to… or whine. Using a tone that is friendly and respectful makes it more likely parents will listen and take what you say seriously. It also makes it more likely that they will talk to you in the same way.
