The theme: “Travelling around Great Britain”

Objectives :

1. to develop pupils’  speaking , listening and reading skills ;
2. to practice using the words on the topic ;
3. to develop pupils’  imagination ;
4. to stimulate pupils’ analytical , comparative and creative thinking ;
5. to encourage pupils to respect culture , customs and traditions of other countries ;
6. to incorporate group and pair work .

Equipment :

 A tape recorder , a big map of Great Britain , pictures with plant symbols of England ,Scotland ,Wales and Northern Ireland , self evaluation cards , handouts.

Procedure

1.Introduction.Greeting.

Teacher : Good morning ,friends!

Pupils : Good morning, teacher!

Teacher : Nice to meet you!

Pupils : We are glad to meet you too!

Teacher : Are you OK today ?

Pupils : We are fine, thank you!

Teacher : Today we continue our discovery of the UK. Do you like to travel? Let’s travel!

2. Vocabulary Revision

But before our journey let’s revise our knowledge in geography. We’ll start with revising geographic terms and some word – combinations and geographical names. Take out the card 1, please!

1. North    in the north    northern   northwest           

South     in the south   southern  northeast     

East       in the east    eastern     southwest 

West     in the west   western    southeast

Teacher: Let’s examine the location of the country. The first station of our travelling is “ Quiz “

1. Where is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland situated ?
2. Where do the British Isles lie?
3. What are the British Isles separated from the continent by?
4. What does the United Kingdom consist of?
5. What is the central part of Great Britain? 
6. Where does Scotland lie?
7. What is situated to the west of Great Britain? 
8. Where is Northern Ireland located? 
9. What is the capital of  England?
10.                 What is the capital of  Scotland?
11.                 What is the capital of Wales?
12.                 What is the capital of Northern Ireland?

(Pupils answer the questions , using their knowledge from the previous lessons. For each correct answer they get one point – “  A  happy face” .Then they take their self evaluation cards and write down the numbers of correct answers.)

3. Grammar Practice ( The Passive Voice)

Teacher: The next station is “ Jumbled sentences”. You get card 2 with jumbled sentences. Your task is to put all the words in a proper order to get a correct sentence, and to write it down in your travel journal (exercise book).Work in pairs and pay attention to where to use the Passive Voice in your sentences.

1. Scotland is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north and in the northwest.
2. The longest rivers are the Thames and the Severn.
3. England is situated in the central part of Great Britain.
4. Wales is a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
5. The narrow strait of water is called the English Channel.
6. The people of Scotland are called the Scots.
7. Each part has its capital.
8. Belfast is the main city of Northern Ireland.
9. The flag of the UK is called the Union Jack.

(Pupils make up sentences, write them down,  then read them.  The  teacher  gives ” a happy face “.)

4.Speaking

Teacher: Now the station  “ Countries and their symbols.” Match the parts of the UK with their national flowers.

(Pupils get card 3.There are pictures of the flowers and the names of the countries there.)             

Keys:

Wales – Leek

Northern Ireland – Shamrock

(Pupils speak about national flowers, it was one of their previous home task : to find some interesting facts about flower symbols.)

Teacher: Let’s discuss the problem of  choosing the way of travelling around the country. Please, choose the means of transport and discuss their advantages and disadvantages. Remember, that we are going from London to Scotland. Work in groups of four and five.

Example:

Pupil 1: I suggest going around the country by… .Travelling by…is…

Pupil 2: Really, if we go by… we can…

Pupil 3: I’ve got another idea. We can go there by…Travelling by…is…

Pupil 4: Besides travelling by… is…

Pupil 5: Let’s go by…

Teacher: What transport do you suggest?

Pupils: By plane / by train / by ship.

(The teacher gives “  happy  faces” to those group who spoke fluently and correctly.)

5. Warming – up

Teacher: It’s very important to be in good mood. Let’s sing easy English song.

(Pupils sing a  song  “ London Bridge”.)

6.Summing –up

Teacher: Now let’s count your “ happy  faces” and marks in self evaluation cards.

(The teacher thanks pupils for their work during the lesson and evaluates their work.)

Teacher: I thank you for your good work during the lesson. We have  received new facts about Great Britain.

7. Home Assignment

Teacher: Using the information about Great Britain write your essay. But children, as for me “  East or West home is best”. We love our Motherland – Ukraine with its  beautiful  nature , rivers, mountains and our merry and kind people.

Pupils: Yes. So do  we.
