British and American English

 Мета : ознайомити учнів з елементами відмінності британського та американського варіантів англійської мови;

виховувати в учнів почуття любові  до англійської мови, поваги  до традицій, культури та національних атрибутів англомовних країн, толерантність, відповідальність.

розвивати в учнів навички аудіювання, читання та усного мовлення, лінгвістичний та краєзнавчий кругозір, пізнавальні здібності та логічне мислення.

Greeting and Aim

1. Привітання і повідомлення теми та мети уроку.

Т: Good morning, students!

S : Good morning, teacher.

T : Take your seats, please. Let's start our English lesson.

Our topic today is «British and American English».At our lesson we’ll compare the two variants of English and you will be able to see some  differences in vocabulary,  spelling and pronunciation. The ‘standard ‘English of Britain is generally taken as the speech of educated people who live in London and the south – eastern part of England (typified by ‘BBC English’), but this is only one of many regional dialects (which include London Cockney, Northern dialects, Midland dialects, South Western dialects, Welsh dialects, and Scottish, Cornish, and Irish dialects ).

It is more difficult to talk in terms of a ‘standard’ American English and there is a considerable number of dialect regions across the United States. United States English has also had a strong influence on Canadian English.

Т:1. Why is it all right to walk on the pavement in Britain, but not a good idea in the USA?( ‘Pavement’ in Britain is ‘sidewalk’ in the USA. ‘Pavement’ in the USA is ‘tarmac’ in Britain.)

2. If you asked for chips in an American restaurant, why would the waiter be surprised? ( ‘Chips’ in the USA are in Britain ‘crisps’  ‘Chips’ in Britain are’ French fries’ in the USA.)

3. Why would people in Britain be surprised if you asked for gas for your car? ( ‘Gas’ in the USA is ‘petrol’ in Britain.)

VOCABULARY

1. Kerb (n)= a line of stone or concrete forming an edge between a pavement and a roadway, so that the pavement is some 15 cm above the level of the road
2. Plough (n)= an agricultural implement with sharp blades, attached to a horse, tractor, etc, for cutting or turning over the earth
3. Fibre (n)= a natural or synthetic filament that may be spun into yarn, such as cotton or nylon
4. Savour (n)= 1. the quality in a substance that is perceived by the sense of taste or smell 2. a specific taste or smell: the savour of lime

3.a slight but distinctive quality or trace

5. Sabre (n)= a stout single-edged cavalry sword, having a curved blade
