Briefly speaking, you`ll find yourselves in a wonderful world of books.
Let`s start, dear children,
Don`t be shy!
And learn the greatest wisdom
Will you try?
How are you today? How is your desk-mate keeping?

T: Look around and you `ll easily guess the topic of today`s lesson. It is dedicated to reading books. As usual we start our lesson with expectations, we`ll try to foresee our results.
What are we going to get from our lesson? Brainstorm your ideas, take a marker and write down them on the blackboard.
I Want
to get new information to learn new words to get good marks
to know more about our library to discuss a lot of questions
T: Thank you. At the end of the lesson we will turn back to them and make the analysis of our work
3. Plan of the work
There are a lot of books, magazines, encyclopedias, dictionaries everywhere. All of them are at your disposal. It is great to read, because a book is the best source of knowledge. We get to know a lot of important, useful and necessary things. Paustovsky said : “He that reads much- knows much”. I think these words will be the motto of our lesson. Today we are going to read our imaginary book, which will be a guide- book to our lesson. Each page contains a lot of different and exciting tasks for you to do. To do all exercises means to read this book to the end. Here is the plan of our work.

V. Dispute (Agree or argue with the other group)
T: I see that you read and know a lot of writers. But nowadays very often people say that they do not like reading. For some pupils books are only sheets of paper and to read means just to look through a book. Now I want to divide you into two groups. Your task is in three minutes to give your ideas ”to read or not to read”
The first group will speak for reading, another one - against (Pro and Con). It does not matter if you personally like to read or do not.
Pro
Books are worth reading, because they :
- are a source of information;
- enrich our mind;
-arose different emotions;
-gives pleasure;
- help to relax…
Con
- It`s boring (I prefer computer games);
- It takes much time;
- books are very expensive;
- books on school programme are not interesting;
- it is better to watch a film than to read;
- they are out of fashion.
T: Thank you for sharing your thoughts. But still people do read books whether we like it or not.
VI. Proverbs
T: You know children, people have always paid much attention to writings and there are a great number of proverbs about books. Let`s get acquainted with them.
1. Matching
T: Your task now is to reproduce some proverbs. Somebody has mixed the parts of them, so match them and try to choose the Ukrainian or Russian equivalents.
A ROOM WITHOUT BOOKS IS A BODY WITHOUT SOUL
THERE IS NO FRIEND SO FAITHFUL AS A GOOD BOOK
BOOKS ARE THE BEST TEACHERS
BOOKS AND FRIENDS SHOULD BE FEW BUT GOOD
WEAR THE OLD COAT AND BUY A NEW BOOK
2. Commenting on
A room without books is a body without soul. (Дім без книги, те саме що тіло без душі)
There is no friend so faithful as a good book.( Книга - найкращий друг)
Books are the best teachers (Книга-найкращий учитель)
Books and friends should be few but good (Вибирай книгу так, як вибираєш друзів)
Wear the old coat and buy a new book.
T: Remember them and try to use in your speech because they really make it richer.
VII. Role-playing
T: Now you will work in pairs. Act out the situations given on the cards.
In the library (two girls are speaking about reading tastes)
- Do you like reading?
-I enjoy reading! I simply cannot imagine my life without books.
-And what kind of reading do you prefer?
-Oh, I am fond of historical novels. I also like reading adventure stories and science fiction.
-What about fantasy?
- I don`t like fantasy. I find it boring.
-Do you? How strange. To my mind, fantasy is exciting.
- Well, I don`t find it exciting. And anyway I prefer instructive reading.
An exchange of books
- Hello! I`d like to exchange books.
- Well. What book are you returning.
- “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. Thank you for this book. I enjoy reading it. The plot is very interesting.
- Yes, this book is one of the treasures of world literature. And what would you like to take today?
- I want to read an adventure story.
Will you recommend me something exciting.
Have you read “The Headless Horseman” by Thomas Mayne Reid?
- No, not, yet. But the title sounds promising.
-It is about Wild West, cowboys, sombreros. You will like it. You will find there brave men, beautiful women, a lot of adventures and great love. And - a happy end.
-Oh, I love happy ends. Thank you.
- You are welcome.
A new pupil in the library
-Good morning. My name is…I am a new pupil in your school and I`d like to draw books from your library.
- Very well. We are glad to have new readers. Have you got a library card?
-No, not yet.
-Please fill in this form. Write your name and address and the telephone number.
- How long may I keep the books?
- Ten days. But if you want some books for a longer period, you can prolong them/
- Thank you. I wonder if I could get some books about wars. I am interested in history.

- Thank you.
A book for a friend

-W hat kind of reading does he like?
- It is rather hard to say. He is a regular book-worm. He reads everything he can lay his hands on: adventure and travel books, fairytales and historical novels. The last thing I saw him reading was a detective story.
- What about Walter Scott? He is a very talented, famous writer. Has your friend read “Ivanhoe”?
- I think, not yet.
- So take “Ivanhoe”. I am sure he will like it.
- Thank you for your good advice.
Now it is
VIII. Poems
Books
We call them friends
And we can find
A lot of them
For our mind.
They teach us
To be kind and clever.
Make friends with them
Once and forever.
T: What is the main idea of this poem?
P1: I fully agree with the proverb: “There is no friend so faithful as a good book” This poem proves this idea.
A Book
A book, I think, is very like
A little golden door,
That takes me into places
Where I`ve never been before.
It leads me into fairy land
Or countries strange and far
And, best of all, the golden door
Always stands ajar.
T: What is the book compared in this poem with?
P2: The book is compared in this poem with a door, which opens for us a world of knowledge.
IX. Interview
An Interviewer: We live in the XXI century. I n the age of television, computers and Internet reading books is not as important as it was some years ago. It`s interesting to know your point of view. What do you think about reading, its role in your life.
Do you like reading?
- Yes, I am fond of reading different novels and stories. By the time I was five, my mother had taught me to read. I am grateful to my Mum now, because reading is a real pleasure.
- I am fond of reading too. I`ve got a very good collection of books at home and I`m proud of it. I have different books: fairytales, love stories, classics, historical novels, science fiction. I think reading is my hobby. But I don`t like reading descriptions. They are so long and boring.
What kind of reading do you prefer?
- I prefer historical novels, detective stories and travel books. I think these kinds of literature are the most interesting and exciting. Usually such books are written by well-known writers.
Do you read books only for your classes or do you do any extra reading?
- I am too busy on weekdays to do extra reading. I have to prepare a lot of tasks in different subjects. But on holidays I am totally absorbed in the wonderful adventure novels or science fiction books.
Where do you usually borrow books?
- I usually go to our school library. It is convenient for me, because it does`t take me much time to get here.
- As for me, I usually go to the local library, because my aunt is a librarian there and she always recommends me good books and magazines to read.
- I like reading as long as it is something short. Otherwise I can`t follow what is happening. So I prefer short stories, which I can finish quickly.
Do you want to tell a few words about your reading tastes?
- With pleasure. I love reading funny books, books that make me laugh. Besides I prefer books where the main character is like me, with problems similar to mine. I want to see how they manage to solve their difficulties.

XI. Dramatizing
T: There are books which have been our great favourites since childhood. We grow up with them, they stay in our memory forever. All children like fairytales told by their mothers. One of them is well-known “Red Riding Hood”
Today we have an opportunity to meet with famous characters but in a new modern version of the fairytale. Our pupils have prepared and dramatized it for you.
Little
Red Riding Hood and the Wolf
FROM REVOLTING RHYMES BY ROALD DAHL, 1982
(Red Riding Hood is going through the forest)
Children:
1. What is your name? - Red riding Hood.
2. Where did you go to? – To the Woods.
3. Why? – To see my granny.
4. Whom did you see in the forest? – I saw a big Bad Wolf.
Every kid knows my story and its happy end.
Children: Tell your story again.
Red Riding Hood: OK! Listen to my story.
As soon as Wolf began to feel
That he would like a decent meal,
He went and knocked on Grandma's door.
When Grandma opened it, she saw
The sharp white-teeth, the horrid grin,
And Wolfie said, "May I come in?"
Poor Grandmamma was terrified,
"He's going to eat me up!" she cried.
And she was absolutely right:
He ate her up in one big bite.
But Grandmamma was small and tough,
And Wolfie wailed, "That's not enough!
I haven't yet begun to feel
That I have had a decent meal!”
He ran around the kitchen yelping,
"I've got to have a second helping!"
Then added with a frightful leer,
"I'm therefore going to wait right here
Till Little Miss Red Riding Hood
Comes home from walking in the wood."
He quickly put on Grandma's clothes;
(Of course he hadn't eaten those).
He dressed himself in coat and hat.
He put on shoes, and after that,
He even brushed and curled his hair,
Then sat himself in Grandma's chair.
In came the little girl in red.
She stopped. She stared. And then she said,
"What great big ears you have, Grandma."
"All the better to hear you with,"
the Wolf replied.
"What great big eyes you have, Grandma,"
said Little Red Riding Hood.
"AH the better to see you with,"
the Wolf replied.
He sat there watching her and smiled.
He thought, "I'm going to eat this child.
Compared with her old Grandmamma,
She's going to taste like caviar."
Then Little Red Riding Hood said, "But Grandma,
what a lovely great big furry coat you have on."
"That's wrong!" cried Wolf. "Have you forgot
To tell me what BIG TEETH I've got?
Ah well, no matter what you say,
I'm going to eat you anyway."
The small girl smiles. One eyelid flickers.
She whips a pistol from her knickers.
She aims it at the creature's head,
And bang bang bang, she shoots him dead.
A few weeks later, in the wood,
I came across Miss Riding Hood.
But what a change! No cloak of red,
No silly hood upon her head.
She said, "Hello, and do please note
My lovely furry WOLFSKIN COAT."
T: Thank you. Our actors were perfect.
XII. Summing up
T: Let’s some up our work but first let’s turn back to our expectations.
I think, you`ve learned a lot of interesting things at the lesson. Reading is a real pleasure. Read and learn. A good book really makes us intelligent and better. So my dears, love books, they are source of knowledge and only knowledge can make us strong and better.
