Plan
І. Warming-up, greetings, topic and aims of the lesson.
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, nice to meet you. The topic of our lesson is Celebrity Culture. During our lesson, we revise the words about the appearance and character of a person, listen to the stories about celebrities, and revise how we can use modal verbs when speculating about the present situation. Then you present your own presentations about your favourite celebrity.
Let’s revise the words about appearance, clothes and celebrities which we studied some lessons ago, look at the blackboard. Who wants to go to the blackboard, remember and write these words?
Positive role model cute ugly stunning stalker paparazzi
unattractive glamorous
pretty attractive
good-looking handsome
celebrity gossip slim skinny gorgeous
Which words have positive meanings, which of them are negative?
formal casual dark
old-fashioned colourful
designer elegant
smart good quality
imaginative official
We revised all the words and now let’s describe the photos of your
favourite celebrities, using these words.
Answer the questions: Is she shunning? What clothes does he wear? Who is glamorous here? Who tends to wear designer clothes? Whose style is formal?
II. Revising grammar.
I’m sure everyone must come to our lesson in time because we have guests today. I definitely know you can’t be lazy. It’s possible you may be writing some notes during the lesson. It is not possible you might have time for getting bored. Look at the blackboard, what structure do I use? As you remember from the previous lessons, we use modal verbs must can’t, might, could to speculate about the present situation.
(On the blackboard, there are sentences:
I’m sure you must come in time for the lessons.
I definitely know you can’t be lazy.
It’ possible you might/could/may be writing some notes.)
Please, pronounce after me these sentences, pay attention to the stress of the main words in the sentence.
Now let’s practice how to use modals verbs when you speculate about the present situation. You should remember when we are sure that it’s definitely true, we use…(must), when we are sure that it isn’t true, we use…(can’t) .When it probably can happen or we are not definitely sure, we use…(may, could, might). Be attentive with using only infinitive forms after the modal verbs.
What else we must/might/could/can/t do at our lesson? (Students make their own sentences).
Well, now open your Language Choice p.10, ex.28 and choose the correct modal verbs to complete the speculations.
III. Pre-listening tasks. We revised how to use modal verbs. Now please, open your course books ex.4, p.42. Look through the headings and try to find out what is the general idea of the talk? Underline a key word in every heading. What could be stories about? Make guesses about what is going to be mentioned. There is one extra heading. (TS2.30)
Let’s listen to the talk and arrange all the headings in the correct order.
Now let’s listen twice and answer the questions.
IV. It seems to me that you are tired, let’s watch the video about the future star. (Video) Let’s share your opinions: Is it important for girls to have such good relationships with their fathers? Could this girl be a celebrity soon?
V. I asked you to prepare your own presentations about your favourite celebrities.
(Students show their presentations, some slides are here).
VI. Summing-up. At our lesson today we spoke about celebrities. Work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions.
-Why do people want to become a celebrity?
-What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a celebrity?
-How could celebrities influence on your life?
