Topic: “Healthy Lifestyle”.

Objectives: to develop pupils’ communicative skills in holding a discussion; to develop critical thinking through the use of interactive techniques in small groups; to develop students’ abilities to analyze facts and information; to develop pupils’ reading skills; to get students to work out the positive attitude to healthy way of life.

                                          Procedure

I. Introduction.

T: Good morning boys and girls! Glad to see you! How are you? I am sure you are very interested in what we are going to talk about today. But first of all I would like to start our lesson with a song  ( “Who Wants to Live Forever” Queen).  Listen and answer: what question is raised in the song.

T: Who wants to live forever?

P: I am sure that everybody wants to live forever.

T: But is it possible to live forever?

P1: No, it is impossible to live forever.

P2: But it is possible to live a long life.

T: So, today we shall speak about what we should do to live a long healthy life. And the topic of our lesson is “Healthy Lifestyle”. Look at the blackboard, read the proverbs written on the board, choose one you find particularly true or meaningful to be a motto of our lesson.

  •      Health is above all.
  •      Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy and wise.
  •      A healthy mind in a healthy body.
  •      Health is better than wealth.
  •      An apple a day keeps a doctor away.
  •      Eat at pleasure, drink with measure.

    P1, P2, P3 P4

Any of these sayings can be a motto of our lesson, because undoubtedly health is the most important thing for every person.

II. Warming up.

T: Tell me what images come to your mind when you think about Healthy Life Style. Let`s try to build a Pyramid of Health. Write on the imaginary bricks your association with Healthy Life Style and stick them on the board.

If you want to lead a healthy life you should ...

Go in for sports; eat healthy food; take long walks in the open air; wash your hands before meals; sleep with your window open; keep your body clean; do morning exercises every day; stop playing computer games; not drink alcohol and smoke; keep your teeth clean.

III. Panel discussion.

T: The problem of health is topical and closely connected with our life. It`s the most        important thing in the world. We should be more careful to our health. Am I right?

P1: That`s absolutely right. We are healthy when all parts of our bodies and of our minds work together properly. We cannot be happy unless we feel well. It`s my opinion.

P2: I fully agree with you. As far as I know ancient Greeks knew the value of   good health. They even named one goddess Hygeia, which means goddess of health, Hygeia was the daughter of Asclepius, the god of medicine. The Greeks prayed to her to give them good health.

P3: As far as I know, the Romans spoke of health in a proverb: ”A healthy mind in a healthy body”. In addition to physical health, an understanding of mental health is also important.

P4: I want to add. The body does a great deal to take care of itself, but by learning a few important health rules, it is possible to help body to work at its best.

P5: Many people say, “Good health means not being ill”. That is true. But health is more than that. Good health is something positive. We have good health when our bodies and our minds are able to work at their best.

T: All in all, you are right.

IV. Problem solving activity (“Fish Bowl”).

T: Unfortunately “Health is not valued till illness comes”. And sometimes happens that people become ill. Why does it happen? Let`s discuss it using a method “fish bowl”. Who wants to be in the “fish bowl”?

Problem “Why do people become ill?”

The rest of the pupils listen to the discussion of the pupils in the “fish bowl”, agree   or/disagree with their point of view, add your arguments.

                                                  P1P2P3

                                          P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 P9

P1: I think people become ill because of the pollution. Acid rains, traffic in big cities, chemicals in rivers and seas…they can all make us seriously ill.

P2: I know that some people eat the wrong kind of food. Others eat too much or too little. It`s not surprising that people like this often become ill.

P3: You right, but there is another question- why do we get diseases? And there are three main reasons: 1.We catch them from other people. 2. Our bodies develop them. 3. We inherit them from our parents and grandparents (f.e., some kinds of heart diseases)/

P4: they didn`t mention stress. Modern life is full of pressure and problems. Some people sleep badly, don`t enjoy life and suffering from stress. Stress can lead to many diseases.

P5: I quite agree with you. Buy the way, many people pollute themselves. They smoke and drink alcohol.

P6: I must say that thousands of accidents still happen at home and at work every day. As a result some people die and many become ill.

P7: I think a little exercise is one of the reasons of becoming ill. Exercise is very important for good health. Without it the body becomes weak and less able to fight illness.

P8: We must remember some rules if we want to be healthy…

    V. Case study (analyze of the situation).

T: You are to decide either to be healthy or to ruin your life. It`s your world. Look at the first picture on the board. Would you like to be the picture of  health like this girl? (to be the picture of  health – to look very happy). Look at the second picture. The name of this man is S.B. I found out his story from a very popular TV show nowadays “Real Doctors”. Your task is to analyze the situation in pairs, answer the question: Why has S.B. become ill? Define the three worst factors.

Ps: We both   think       that the three worst factors are…

                       consider

                       believe

                       agree

  •      he lives in an industrial area
  •      he often gets stuck in traffic jams
  •      he works in a big company
  •      his work is very stressful
  •      he does not have much time to have substantial meal
  •      he usually eats hot and spicy snacks
  •      he does not often go out with friends

VI. Listening.

T: But some people live a long healthy life. One of them is Mr. Sinclair. You are going to hear a radio interview with this elderly man. (“Exam Excellence”ex.6,p.79) What advice did Mr. Sinclair give us to live a long life?

  •          Pre-listening: try to guess what kind of information to expect in the recording. Which of sentences do you think are true and which are false?
  •          Listening.
  •          Post-listening: choose the correct option a, b or c according to the information you hear in the recording.

P: Mr. Sinclair is not crazy about a healthy lifestyle. His advice is to be active as possible and have a positive attitude.

    VII. Reading.

Text “How to live to be 100”.  (“Exam Excellence”ex.3,p.78).

T:  To do this activity you have to be divided into two groups. Choose the colour you like more (pink or green) and take your place in your group.  You will get the same set of tips on leading a healthy life. Your task is:

Group 1: choose those tips people should follow to live to be 100.

Group 2: people shouldn`t follow; make necessary changes in the sentences.

The leader of the group reads “do`s” and “don`ts”.

VIII. Watching video.

“Living longer, living happier”.  (Places where people live longer, ABC News).

T: There are some areas in the world where people tend to live longer, healthier lives. These areas are called “Blue Zones”.

After watching: check your guesses. Were you right?
