TRAVELLING, GETTING THERE

Equipment: students book « New Destinations» level A1, videofilm «Travelling around the world», computer, cards with roles

Goals:

• to teach reading the text with getting some information;
• to teach students to express their own opinions;
• to teach to work in groups;
• to develop  linguistic guesses, skills of summarising; to bring up a sense of respect to other peoples’ traditions and customs,their culture.

The proceֺdure:

1. The beginning of the lesson.

 Warming-up.

 Good  morning dear children. How are you? Are you feeling well? So, let’s begin our work. Now you are going to watch a video.While watching pay attention to some things  and be ready to answer these questions. Videofilm”Travelling around the World”

1.How do usually people travel to see the world?

2.What do  people travel by?

3.What places do people usually visit?

Supposed answers: People usually travel by plane, by car,by ship, by boat, by motorbike ets. They usually visit other countries, cities, mountains, deserts and they like to travel by ocean or by sea.

II. The main part of the lesson.

1.Appealing to prior knowledge.

Now let’s recollect which means of transport do you know. We are going to do exercise 1 on page 96.Your task is to match the pictures with the phrases.

 (by plane (picture 5), by ship (picture 7), by underground (picture 1), by tram (picture 3), by bus (picture 6), by train (picture 2), on foot (picture 4).

How do you think why do people travel by plane? (by train,by ship,on foot ets.)

2. Acquiring new knowledge.

Now you are going to read the text about some unusual means of transport. Have you ever travelled by any unusual mean of transport? Reading this text you will learn how some people travel in the USA, Botswana and Thailand. Think if you would like to try them.

Reading the text «Getting there», ex. 2 p.96. Group work using the method «Reading circle».

For our work we need groups of four. Let’s count by four. All the ones will sit here, all the twos will sit here and so on. Now we have four groups of four students. Each person in your group will have a role.I’ll give you some cards with your roles.The first role will be the reader.What does the reader do? Next we have the translator.What does the translator do? The third role is word wizard. The word wizard has to find four new words in the text and write them in English and in Ukrainian. The last role is the illustrator. The students usually understand what the illustrator does.We will work by paragraphs.So, after the first paragraph is finished we will change our roles in a circle.Everyone will give the role to the person on their left. You will get a paper and you will devide this paper into three sections (one for each paragraph).In each section the word wizard and the illustrator will put their work. The illustrator will draw the main idea very quickly(about 60 seconds). After finishing your work you will come to the blackboard and share your results.

Students work with the text and after finishing their tasks present them on the blackboard.

3.Applying new knowledge.

Now we continue our work.You will work in your groups further. Your task is  to write a postcard to your friends. 

Group one. You are in the USA.You have tried to travel by the Segway. Write about your impressions.( Is it convenient? Is it quick enough?)

Group two. You are in Botswana. You have travelled around the Okavango Delta on a Makoro. Write about your impressions. (Is it dangerous? Were you terrified?)

Group three. You are in Thailand. Elephant rides are very popular with tourists  there.You have tried the ride on top of the largest land animal in the world. Describe you emotions.(Is it amasing? Have you had an unbelievable experience?) 

Group four. Your task is the most interesting.You are in some exotic country. You can choose any country you like.Write about some interesting ways of travelling in this country. (Have you had an interesting experience getting around the country? What did you travel by?)

The task for all of you is: try to use the words you first came across in the text you have read. You have five minutes.After you have finished you will present your  postcards.

III.The final part of the lesson.

Thank you very much for your work, my dear students.You were great! I was  pleased with your work.

Your homework is: Workbook p.70, ex. D. Put the dialogue in the correct order. Write 1-6.
