Ecology in my district

Objectives:

• Practical: to practice speaking, reading, listening and summarizing on topic, to develop language skills (Modal Verbs);
• Developing: to develop anticipation to teach to memory and logical thinking, discover cultural and moral value;
• Up-bringing: to increase awareness of every pupil towards the problem.

Equipment: computers, textbooks and handouts.

Procedure of the lesson

I. Introduction

1. Greetings and aim.

 Dear children!  Today we are going to discuss the problem of environmental protection. The intensive development of science, industry and chemistry has made the pollution of the environment a global problem of our century. You know that people all over the world are worried about it. The issue of ecology is very important.

2. Warming up activities.

A) What emotions do you feel at the beginning of the lesson? Are you happy or sad and why? (Pupils go to the blackboard and write your feelings)

B) What is ecology? What is environment? I know that you have prepared the quotations of the famous people about nature. (Pupils read the quotations of the famous people about nature at p.___)

 Cherkassy’s region is beautiful and prosperous. There are some ecological problems in our district too. What are they?

• Air pollution
• Water pollution
• Soil pollution
• Industrial pollution

All these problems are very serious and acute.

1. Our region is really beautiful. There are different kinds of trees and flowers in the forests and meadows.

But today they are disappearing. People cut down trees. If trees are destroyed and people pick flowers and grass, birds and animals may become extinct.

There are many rivers in our region. It will be wonderful to have a good rest and relax near the river. But they are polluted. We should clean and protect our rivers and spring.

Our life is impossible without cars. There are a lot of cars, lorries and buses in region. So, they cause air and water pollution. Transports contaminate air, soil and drinking water with dangerous chemicals like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide.

I’d like to add. Nowadays half of the water sources are polluted with communal and industrial wastes. It’s a result of economic difficulties.

We can see rubbish in the streets and parks. We leave litter near the rivers. Litter is not only ugly; it can be harmful to wildlife.

A lot of trees and flowers are planted in Cherkaschyna every year. They make our region more beautiful. They clean the air we breathe. Our region is our home. We must take care of it for ourselves and for future generation.

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

 The protection of environment has become one of the most burning problems of our century.

 Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil we grow grain and vegetables. Every year the world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

 The pollution of air and the world's ocean, destruction of the ozone layer is the result of man's careless interaction with nature, a sign of ecological crisis.

 The most horrible ecological disaster befell Ukraine and its people in the result of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in April 1986. A great damage has been done to Ukraine's agriculture, forests and people's health.

 Environmental protection is a global problem. That is why the most serious measures to create a universal system of ecological security should be taken.

 The activity of various environmental organizations helps to improve the situation. Among them are the Greenpeace and The Green Party.

 If we are unable to learn to use the environment carefully and to protect it from destructive man's activities, very soon we'll have no world to live in.
