Robert Burns: The National Poet of Scotland

Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759, in Alloway, Scotland. He was a famous poet and songwriter, often called "The Bard of Scotland." His poems and songs celebrated love, nature, and Scottish culture.

Burns grew up in a poor farming family and had little formal education. However, he loved reading and writing. His first book of poems, "Poems, Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect", was published in 1786 and made him famous. Some of his most well-known works include "Auld Lang Syne", "To a Mouse", and "Tam o' Shanter."

Burns died at the young age of 37, on July 21, 1796. Despite his short life, his poetry remains popular, and every year on January 25, people celebrate "Burns Night" in his honor with poetry readings, music, and traditional Scottish food.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne!

     Chorus:

For auld lang syne, my dear,      For auld lang syne.

We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,      For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint stowp!

And surely I’ll be mine!

And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet, For auld lang syne.

     Chorus

We twa hae run about the braes, And pou’d the gowans fine; But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,

Sin’ auld lang syne.

     Chorus

We twa hae paidl’d in the burn,

Frae morning sun till dine; But seas between us braid hae roar’d

Sin’ auld lang syne.

     Chorus

And there’s a hand, my trusty fere!

And gie’s a hand o’ thine! And we’ll tak a right gude-willie

waught,

For auld lang syne.

     Chorus
