Topic. Travelling over London.

 

Aim:

  1. Greeting.

Teacher. Good morning, girls and boys! Nice to meet you! How are you? I’m fine too. Today we’ll have an unusual lesson. 

  1. Work with the epigraph.

The epigraph of the lesson is “Travel broadens the mind!” How do you understand this sentence?

Pupil 1. Travelling somewhere is a good idea. We can learn about a different culture and meet new friends.

Pupil 2. We can get new skills.

Pupil 3. Travelling always means adventures and new experience.

Teacher. Thanks. You’re right. And today we are going to travel on…

Teacher. Let’s go to London. What do you know about London?

Pupil 1. London is the capital of Great Britain.

Pupil 2. I think London is a fantastic city.

Pupil 3. It is full of cinemas, theatres, museums and art galleries.

Pupil 4. It’s a great city with beautiful parks and gardens.

- Where is London situated?

Pupil 3. It is situated on the river Thames.

-Is it one of the biggest cities in the world? Is it beautiful?

Pupil 4. Yes, it is.

-What can you say about population of London?

Pupil 5. Its  over 7 mln. people.

-Are you a Londoner?

Pupil 6. No, I am not.

-Have you ever been to  London?

Pupil 7. No, I have not.

-Would you like to go to London?

Pupil 8. Yes, I would.

Teacher. What means of transport do we take?

Pupil 9. We may travel by bus. London buses are called double-deckers. They have a bus driver and sometimes a conductor.

Pupil 10. We can get to most places in London very quickly by underground (Tube). There are many lines on the London Underground.

Teacher. What do we should take to our journey?

Pupil 11. We should take a passport, a travel document, a buss pass.

Guide. Hello. My name is . We welcome you to London. Let me introduce myself. London is one of the largest cities in the world. London is more than two thousand years old. It is the city where ancient and modern life side by side. We start from London Eye.

Guide. For an amazing view of London, take a ride on London Eye. At 135 metres, even Big Ben looks small! The wheel is also known as the Millennium Wheel. The London Eye has 32 capsules around its wheel.  Each capsule can carry 25 passengers.

Guide. This is Tower Bridge. It is a busy and vital crossing of the Thames River. It is the only Thames bridge which opens. You can have a nice walk along it. You can also enjoy the view of the city from it. Crossing the river by the Tower Bridge you can see the Tower of London. It is one of the oldest buildings of the city. Now we are coming to Tower of London. It has served as a fortress, a royal palace, a prison, a museum. It was founded by Julius Caesar and in 1066 rebuilt by William the Conqueror.

Pupil 1. I know that the ravens are another famous sight. The legend says that without them the Tower will fall.

Guide. Now we are at St. Paul’s Cathedral. It is the biggest English church. It’s the most famous of all English architecture. It’s the greatest work of Sir Christopher Wren.

Pupil 1. It dates back to the 17th century. It has the second largest ring of bells in the world.

Pupil 2. The cathedral is famous for its Whispering Gallery.

Guide. In front of you you can see Big Ben.

Pupil 1. I know…This famous Tower Clock is the symbol of London.

Guide. Yes, it is. Big Ben is the real bell which strikes every quarter og an hour. The official name of the tower from 2012 is the Elizabeth Tower. It was built by English architect in 1859. The tower clock started on the 31st of may in 1859.

  1.  Work with idioms and proverbs.

Teacher. Let’s remember idioms and proverbs about travelling.

Guide. At the moment you will see Westminster Abbey. It is a famous church where kings, queens and many famous people are buried.

Pupil 1. I know that it’s the royal church. It is more than 900 years old. It is situated not far from the Houses of Parliament.

Pupil 2. It was founded in 1050 as a monastery, but later it was rebuilt. 

Guide. The Abbey is the symbol of English traditions. One of the treasures of the Abbey is the ancient Coronation Chair.

Guide. Now we are going to Buckingham Palace. It is the Queen’s official residence. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. There are 600 rooms in Buckingham Palace. Tourists always go to see the ceremony of changing the Guard there. It happens every day at 11 a.m.
Pupil 2. The palace is like a small town. With a police station, two post offices, hospital, two sports clubs, a cinema and a swimming pool.
