S1: Ukrainians, especially young girls, like everything mysterious and unusual. Due to this, the ancient tradition of divination on Andrew's day keeps being popular. The evening parties are held on the night from 12th to 13th of December and include a lot of funny activities. The main aim of these activities is to know more about your future husband and destiny. Girls practice various divinations using mirrors, fire, and even shoes. The most popular tradition is the divination with papers. A friend of the girl writes 12 male names on 12 small pieces of paper. After this, the girl put all the papers under her pillow to sleep on it overnight. In the morning she randomly picks one paper from there. According to the divination, this will be a name of her future husband.

S2: The day of Saint Mykolai is the feast with a special charm. Orthodox Christians celebrate it on the 19th of December. Children are waiting eagerly for this day the whole year. On the eve of the feast they write letters with their wishes to St. Mykolai and put them into mail boxes or leave on a window sill. The day before the feast children recollect all good and bad deeds. Obedient children will surely find a present under a pillow (in the socks or shoes). This wonderful tradition passes from one generation to another, allowing children to form their values and belief. Saint Mykolai takes care of soldiers, drivers, and travelers. He helps poor people in trouble and is considered to be a patron of children and students, sailors, sellers. The traditional treat on this day is so called Mykolaichyky, which are a kind of cookies.

S3: New Year is the most popular and most beloved holiday in Ukraine. New Year’s Day, January the 1st, is a national public holiday in Ukraine. It marks the start of the year in the Gregorian calendar. In the end of December many Ukrainians decorate their Christmas tree and buy presents to give to one another. Ukrainians like to celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends and family. And in spite of freezing temperatures, they often toast the New Year outdoors, accompanied by the bang and sparkle of fireworks. Those who stay at home, often listen to presidential speech broadcasted on all national TV channels just before midnight. People gather together by the festive table with gourmet dishes. Father Frost is known as the Ukrainian version of Santa Claus. His coat is long and decorated with silver stars and crosses. He is traditionally a symbol of winter.

S4: The 6 of January is Christmas Eve, one of the most interesting and mystic holidays. It has to be 12 dishes that symbolize 12 apostles. « Kutia » is a very important dish that must be on the table. This dish is made from boiled wheat or barley with the adding of honey, nuts, raisins and poppy seeds. But in each region the recipe can be different. Supper starts only when the first star appears in the sky. It symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ. Family says the grace and after that every member of family should take a spoon of «kutia». The 7th of January is Christmas. Some people go to a church, gather with families around the festive table. Also there is a tradition to sing «koliadky» (Christmas carols). Young boys go from house to house and sing koliadky or act some folklore sketches. The host should give them money, sweets or meals.
Group 3. After school holidays.

S5: Malanka is often called «Generous evening» (Schedryi vechir). It is the second among 3 big winter Ukrainian holidays that falls on the 13th of January evening. The ancient way of this holiday celebration can be seen in villages of the regions that keep their traditions. The traditional dinner includes meat, salo etc. There’s much fun during the the evening. Malanka is the name of the performance traditionally held by local youth. Young people make a big preparation, create unusual costumes, paint faces and bring a lot of equipment. All these to properly fulfill the mission - look scary and make a lot of noise. The group goes from house to the house singing special songs (schedrivky), dancing and playing. Back in times, people believed it brings lots of luck and happiness through making evil forces go away. This holiday is often called as Ukrainian Halloween. Malanka is also celebrated as the Old New Year.
SLIDE 10
S6: And the last one of the series of big winter holidays is Vodohrescha. It comes on the 19th of January. This holiday is connected with the event when the Christ was baptized in the Jordan river. On this day every church conducts a special ministering where they sanctify the water. After, everybody can take it home to use for special occasions during the year. For the bravest and healthiest ones, there is another sacral tradition - holly diving. People believe that water on this day becomes healing. That’s why a lot of people go to rivers and lakes to dive under freezing water three times. However, note that it’s dangerous and should be done in specific places under a supervision of medical workers.
