A Melting Story
(after M.Twain)
One winter evening a country storekeeper in the Green Mountain State was about closing up for the night, and while standing in the snow outside, putting up the window shutters, saw through the glass a fellow inside take a pound of fresh butter from the shelf and hide it in his hat.
When the storekeeper came in, he invited the fellow, whose name was Seth,to sit down.
He said that on such a cold night like that a little something warm would not hurt him.
Seth felt very uncertain. On the one hand, he had the butter, which was very anxious to be off. On the other hand, he wanted to have something warm. So he stayed.
Meanwhile the grocer opened the store door and put in as many sticks as the place would admit. Seth already felt the butter setting down closer to his hair and he jumped up declaring he must go.
But the storekeeper had a story to tell him. He also treated Seth to a smoking glass of hot drink. Poor Seth now began to smoke as well as melt.
Bit by bit, butter came down pouring from under his hat and his handkerchief was already wet with greasy overflow.
Talking away as if nothing was the matter , the fun-loving grocer suggested that Seth should take his hat off. Seth protested angrily as now butter was pouring down the poor man’s face and neck so that he was literally in a perfect bath of oil.
“ Well, good night , Seth,” said the humorous grocer. “ I think the fun I have had out of you it worth nine pence, so I shan’t charge you for that pound of butter in your hat’.
