Helping Mother Earth
We can peacefully roam.
2.  T: The 22nd of April is a very important day for people all over the world. We celebrate the Earth Day. It emphasizes our will and desire to protect our planet and to make it the safest place to live and turn it info a green park with lots of trees, bushes and flowers. We feel troubled about polluted air and water. We know that polluted air, land and water are harmful to plants, animals and people. So, this day is for people. They have to learn how to keep our planet clean. Today’s conference is devoted to the great date, April 22nd. We are going to discuss the problems of littering pollution and environmental protection.
So let’s discuss these problems. Now all of you are the “representatives” of different English-speaking countries. Let’s have a talk on the problems you see on the blackboard.

 Main Part
1. Littering.
2. Our pollution.
3. Water pollution.
4. Overcrowding, overpopulation.
5. Animals which are almost existant.
6. Destruction of natural resources.
P1: Listen, we’ve got a massage from the Earth. (Звучить лист-звернення Землі до молоді світу).
Dear brothers and sisters! Take care of me. Don’t cut the wild flowers. They may all disappear. Plant a tree a year. Remember from one oak a forest grows. It’s very simple. Never throw or break glass bottles. You damage the land. Take only what you need from me. You are my parts.

So your challenge is to restore an ecological balance and to maintain me clean and healthy for future generations.

3. Учасники конференції підготували клятву вірності землі.
I people allegiance to the Earth, to its flora and found and human life that it supports. I know that our planet is indivisible with safe air, water and soil.

4. Спец кореспондент газети «Zeleny Swit» бере інтервю в учасників конференції.
1) Was pollution such a serious problem some hundreds years ago?
2) When did people become alarmed with the danger of pollution?
3) What can environmental pollution cause?
4) Can pollution be stopped immediately?
5) When did the accident at the Chernobyl power station take place?
6) What is its result?

5. Обговорення учасниками конференції таких проблем:
1. Mankind is worried about nature pollution.
2. Ecology is a science.
3. Different ways of saving the environment.
4. The duty of mankind is to save nature.

(Відповіді учнів)

6. Виступи учасників.
English (P1): The Earth is our home. We must take care of it for ourselves and for the next generation. This means keeping our environment clean. We must teach the younger generation how to protect the land. We must work hard on several environmental problems: cleaning lakes, rivers, seas; studying nature and the effects of pollution; recycling cans and paper.

Ukrainian (P2): The importance of this task is pointed out by ecologists – scientists who study relations between living things and their environment. However, each of us must do everything possible to keep the land, air and water clean. We don’t want to have one more Chornobyl.

Russian (P3) : Ecology is a science about nature. Practically, it’s a science of studying whether we, human beings, keep our environment, the Earth we use, the gifts it gives us: water, air, minerals, plants and animals.

American (P4): Ecology is the science of how living things are related to their environment. Many Americans are concerned about their ecology today. As we know, protection of nature has become one of the vital problems of the 20th century. The Earth provides people with everything that makes the foundation of industrial and cultural production. But the development of industry has a bad influence on the nature of the whole world. People pollute land and water greatly. I think it’s very dangerous because it damages the health of people.

Australian (P5): The Yara River in Australia was once such a pretty place to sit besides on a hot summer day. But that’s all changed now. Factories have appeared on each side of the river and people, sitting besides the river now, throw their wastes and paper into it. Nothing can live and grow in this polluted water now.

Canadian (P6): Around our planet there is a coat of gas called ozone. It’s our protector. It helps to keep our skin from hard sun rays and protects the land. But it is damaged and ruined by factories and plants.

Russian (P3): I want to say considerable progress was made during the second half of the 20th century: forest areas have been planted or replanted; millions of hectares of new forest are planted each year.

American (P4): The good news is that many countries have to end acid rains.

Ukrainian (P2): Environment protection is a great concern of the Ukrainians government. As a result, The Ministry of Environmental Protection was founded in Ukraine. Its tasks are to control the state of environmental and sources of pollution, to protect the water resources of the country.

American (P4): Humans has become so numerous and our tools so powerful that we have driven fellow creatures to extinction, damned the great rivers, torn down ancient forest, poisoned the earth, rain and wind, and ribbed holes in the sky.

English (P1): All this that we know and believe must now become the foundation of the way of life. And this turning point of our relationship with the Earth, we work for an evolution: from dominance to partnership.

Canadian (P6): The problem of disappearing animals is one of the most important. Our mission is to keep our Earth, animals and nature.

Listening

T. Now I want you to listen to the text. To my mind it concerns all people from each country. Let’s listen to it.

A lot of people feel pollution has become one of the biggest problems in the world today. But when we talk about pollution, what do we really mean? When you pollute something, you make it dirty or dangerous of other people or animals. For example, if you put engine oil in water, you pollute it; nobody will be able to drink it or wash in it.

The main reason for pollution is waste – something which is no longer needed. Waste can be many things: yesterday’s newspapers, an old car, your dirty bath water or smoke from a factory chimney. Some waste is dangerous because it contains poisons. The kind of waste is called toxic waste.

All living things, especially people, make waste. All over the world, there are people pollution the land, the sea and the air. There are six billion people in the world. They all need to eat, dress and travel. Most of them need to heat their homes as well. People buy things, they use them and they throw their old things away. Today, we live in a “throw-away” world. Everyone adds to the problem of waste just by being there.

Put “True” or “False”

 Test

  1. Pollution has become one of the biggest problems in the world.
  2. Everyday oil pollutes rivers, seas and oceans.
  3. Dirty water isn’t dangerous for people.
  4. The main reason for pollution is factory chimney.
  5. Some waste is dangerous because it contains poisons.
  6. People do not make waste.
  7. People need to eat, to dress, to travel.
  8. Smoke from factory chimney makes pollution.
  9. People don’t throw old things away.
  10. We live in a “throw-away” world.

Summing up

T. Pupils, today we have spoken much about the most important problem of the world. We must not forget that the Earth is the only place where we live, where our children will live.

 Thanks everybody for your work.

 (Виставлення оцінок)
