Famous persons of the USA

Objectives:

  • to practice the new topic;
  • to present new vocabulary on the topic;
  • to practice previously taught vocabulary on the topic;
  • to improve students’ reading and speaking skills;
  • to develop students’ communicative competence;
  • to activate thinking;
  • to encourage understanding and tolerance to others;
  • to broaden students’ outlook;
  • to encourage students’ understanding of importance of studying;
  • to develop self-esteem and a sense of respect for others.

Outcomes: by the end of the lesson students will be able:

  • to use the words of the topic in speech;
  • to discuss the questions using arguments;
  • to read and understand texts;
  • to give the definitions of the words
  • to speak about American famous persons.

 

Procedure

 

1. Warm-up

Ex.1 p.150

A role play. Three of you are Americans. You are playing the roles of the heroes of your essays fron Ex. 6, Dive 26. The rest are Ukrainians and they have to ask you as many questions as they can about your personalities.

 

2. Vocabulary

Ex.2 p.150

Listen and read the new words and their definitions.

1. eccentric adj strange or unusual

2. to recruit v to find new people to join a company or an organization

3. abolition n ending of a law, a system or an institution

4. to disillusion v to destroy smb’s belief or a good opinion of smb/smth

5. comprehensive adj including all or almost all that may be concerned

6. to worship v to love and admire smb/smth very much

7. lexicographer n a person who writes and edits dictionaries

8. prolific adj producing many works

9. speller n a person who spells words correctly or incorrectly; a book for teaching spelling

 

3. Speaking

Make some sentences with the words above.

 

4. Reading and speaking

Ex.3 p.150-152

Work in groups. Read the texts about prominent people of the USA in the past. Choose the most outstanding person nowadays in your opinion and discuss in class why you have chosen him/her. Give your reasons.

 

5. Listening

Ex.4 p.152

Listen to pupils of “Holosiivskyi” Kyiv lyceum № 241. They are discussing the parliamentary system of the USA together with their teacher Nataliia Tymoshyna. After listening decide if the statements are true or false.

1. The colonies united after the Revolutionary War needed one strong national government.

2. The Constitution was written in 1878.

3. The Constitution is the highest law in the United States.

4. The US government consists of the Congress, the President and his helpers and the Supreme Court.

5. Congress meets in the city of New York.

6. In the Senate there are three hundred senators.

7. A senator’s term is five years.

8. A representative’s term is four years.

9. There are five judges in the Supreme Court.

10. In the House of Representatives there are more than five hundred congressmen.

11. The judges have to work in the Supreme Court for 10 years.

12. The American Constitution was written 150 years ago.

13. Since that time only 27 amendments have been made to the Constitution.

14. The Bill of Rights consists of the first 13 amendments.

 

6. Speaking and writing

Ex.5 p.152

Work in groups. Compare the Parliaments of the USA and Ukraine. Find the similarities and differences and write them down. Present the results of your work to the classmates.

 

7. Summary

Ex.6 p.142

Play a game. Divide into two teams. In turns one team says a word related to the USA, the other team makes a sentence using this word. Each correct sentence gets a point. The team with the most points is the winner

 

8. Homework

Ex.7 p.153

Write back an e-mail to your English-speaking pen friend.

A part of it is given below.

…A week ago my three classmates and I got a task — to do a project about the history of the USA. We had to write a story about the most important events. I don’t know what to choose. Maybe you can help me.
