Українські звичаї та традиції

Мета: поглибити знання учнів про найбільші свята українців та дотримання народних традицій; розвивати в учнів готовність брати участь в англомовному спілкуванні; розвивати естетичні смаки, виховувати культуру спілкування, прийняту в сучасному світі, а також любов та повагу до традицій українського народу.

Обладнання: вишиті рушники та сорочки, зображення національних символів України, записи пісень, мультимедійний супровід (презентації).

(Сцена прикрашена квітами, вишиванками. Лунає пісня про Україну. На сцену виходять ведучі в українських костюмах.)

Pupil 1. Welcome to our party, dear friends. We want to tell you about Ukrainian customs and traditions (slide 1).

Pupil 2. We know them very well, but we want to remind you of them.

Pupil 1. Ukrainians are outgoing people, optimistic and undemanding. Ukrainians see the brighter side of life and have a proverb that explains it all – “Things will sort themselves out somehow”. When they get to know you, they have a great sense of humor, joke a lot and laugh at their own troubles.

Pupils 2. We can't imagine our country without willow, snow-ball tree and beautiful embroidered shirts and towels. They are national symbols. They are connected with many Ukrainians rituals (slide 2, 3, 4, 5).

Pupil 1. Snow-ball tree is a symbol of love and happiness. Ukrainians decorate wedding  bread with flowers of snow-ball tree. The berries of snow-ball tree are used for treatment (slide 6).

Pupil 2. There are many legends, songs, proverbs about snow-ball tree. Do you know the legend about this amazing tree?

Легенда «Калина і Килина»

 Дівчина Килина збирала у лісі ягоди і раптом побачила, що вороги-татари  йдуть до села. Побігла вона до села і попередила односельців. Сміливо кинулися до бою козаки, але в багато разів більше було ворогів – спалили село, а Килину, дівчину-красуню, у полон взяли. За те, що оповістила село, відтяли їй голову, і виріс на тому місці диво-кущ, що за ім'ям дівчини Калиною назвали. Люблять і пам'ятають люди Килину, а калина стала своєрідною пам'яткою про рідну землю, оберегом українців.

Legend about snow-ball tree

Narrator.  One handsome boy was in love with a pretty girl Kalyna. But his parents didn't allow him to marry her. They wanted him to marry a rich girl Hanna instead. Kalyna came to his wedding.

 Many people are in the yard. They are singing and dancing. Kalyna is coming

to the yard too. She is inviting Ivan to dance. They are dancing and talking.

Kalyna. My darling, I love you and want to be with you.

Ivan. Kalyna, you are very kind and pretty but we can't live together. My parents like Hanna.

Kalyna. If you love me, you will leave the wedding, we will go to another village and we will be happy.

Narrator. Hanna is coming to the lovers shouting angrily.

Hanna. Go away! You mustn't be here. Ivan is my husband. We love each other.

Kalyna. Ivan loves me. His parents love your money. He will go with me.

Hanna. He won't go anywhere.

Kalyna. You won't live with me beloved! (Kalyna is starting to beat Hanna. They are angry. They are not listening to Ivan who wants to calm the girls down).

Ivan. Girls! Stop crying! Be calm!

Narrator. They were near the river. Kalyna pulled Hanna into the water. Both girls drowned. (Дівчата штовхають одна одну, падають у воду).

Narrator. Hanna was buried at the cemetery, but Kalyna, as a murderer was buried on the steep slope. A bush with red berries grew there. People called it a snow-ball tree. It became a symbol of girl's beauty and love.

Pupil 1. Ukrainian embroidery occupies an important  place among the various branches of Ukrainian decorative arts (slide 8).

Pupil 2. Embroidery has a rich history in Ukraine and has long appeared in Ukrainian folk dress as well as played a part in traditional Ukrainian weddings and other celebrations.

My mother had embroidered shirt for me

On a very soft and nice piece of cotton.

Pupil 1. Winter is a lovely fairy,

              Sweet and nice and merry.

              So we have a lot of reasons

              To love her, the Queen of the seasons.

Pupil 2. Children love the snow she brings,

              Like a bird on windy wings.

              They love winter games and songs,

              Winter time to them belongs.

(На сцену виходять учні в національних костюмах і співають колядку «Добрий вечір тобі, пане господарю»).

Pupil 1. On January, the 7^th Ukrainians celebrate Christmas. It's the day when Jesus Christ was born. It is celebrated all over Ukraine. (slide 9).

Girl 1. Christmas is a lovely link

            Between old year and new

            That keeps the bonds of friendship

            And of love forever true.

Girl 2. The wonder of Christmas

            May fill your heart

            With peace and joy!

Girl 3. Christmas creates in every soul

            A dwelling place for beauty!

Girl 4. Christmas is a special time

            To remember special people like you!

            Merry Christmas!

Pupil 2. People sing carols, cook a traditional Ukrainian Christmas dish “kutia”, which the whole family eats together. There should be at least 12 different dishes on the table. But “kutia” is the main. The family's youngest child watches through the window for the evening star to appear, a signal that the feast can begin. (slide 10).

Pupil 1. This evening children come around their neighbours and relatives with torches and sparklers (called Bengal lights) spreading grains. They wish people good health and abundant harvest for the next year and ask for some donations.

 Also they perform some Christmas songs called “koliadky” and “shchedrivky”. Then the members of the family go to church (slide 11).

Pupil 2. Ukrainians celebrate the holiday of St. Basil on the 14^th of January. Then “Vodokhryshche” is celebrated. People bless the water, usually at a river or at a well where a cross is made out of blocks of ice (nowadays water is blessed inside the church). They say that Jordan water is very useful and healthful. Ukrainians keep water for the whole year (slide 12).

Pupil 1. One of the favourite Ukrainian holiday is Easter (slide 13).

Pupil 2. Easter is a feast of joy and gladness that unites the people of the world. It is celebrated according the Moon calendar on the first Sunday after the first full spring Moon.

Pupil 1. The last Sunday before Easter is called Willow Sunday (slide 14). On this day pussy-willow branches are blessed in church. People tap each other with these branches repeating the wish:

Boy. “Be as tall as the willow,

         As healthy as the water

         And as rich as the earth.

         Not I am tapping,

         The willow is tapping.

         Easter is in a week” (slide 15).

Pupil 2. The week before Easter is called the White week. During this time an effort is made to finish all the fieldwork before Thursday. On the evening of Pure Thursday the church service is performed after which people return home with lighted candles.

Yaryna. Olena, Maria come here. Easter is coming. It's time to dye coloured Easter eggs.

Olena. Oh! Really, it's Pure Thursday today. It's time to dye our pysanky. If pysanky are dyed on this time, they will be kept for a long time.

Maria. But where can we get paints for our pysanky?

Yaryna. I have a yellow paint. I have boiled it down from the bark of wild apple tree which grows in my garden.

Olena. And my grandmother taught me how to make a green paint. We need scales of young sunflower for this paint.

Oksana. And I also brought a dark paint – from the bark of black alder tree.

Yaryna. Our ancestors believed that pysanka has a magic power, it brings good, prosperity, happiness and protects from bad luck,

 Easter breakfast begins from pysanka or krashanka in every house. When you wash your face in water where red krashanka is, you will be pretty and healthy all year.

 Let's paint our pysanky, girls! (Дівчата малюють писанки) (slide 17).

Pupil 1. Easter begins with the matins and high Mass, during which the paskas, pysanky and krashanky are blessed in church.

Pupil 2. At home the family members gather around the table. The breakfast begins with a prayer and traditional Easter greeting “ Khrystos voskres”. The answer is “Voistynno voskres”.

Pupil 1. After breakfast children go outside and play games. The games last all day and in the evening young men visit the girls' houses asking for pysanka. If he gets one, it means the girl likes him and he is supposed to hire musicians and ask her for a dance.

(Дівчата продовжують розмову).

Maria. We have finished painting our pysanky. They are great and very nice.

Olena. Girls, let's play Easter games now!

Yaryna. Wait a minute! Let's find out whose pysanka is the best one.

• What a beautiful it is. And this one is good! Great! But I like this pysanka most of all. Now we can play Easter games (Дівчата грають Великодні ігри з писанками).

Pupil 1. First game. Players stand in a circle and have one egg for every of them. One

egg is of special colour or marking. Music is played while the eggs are passed around the circle. When the music stops, the person holding the special egg is out. Continue until only one person is left.

(Дівчина, яка залишилася – переможець).

Pupil 1. You are the winner!

The second game. Players are divided into two teams. Each person has a spoon with an egg in it. Each player must carry the egg to set point and back and pass it to the next person's spoon without touching the egg. If the egg is dropped, it must be replaced before the player races on. The first team to finish wins.

(Команда, яка першою закінчила гру – переможець).

This team is the winner. Thank you, girls.

Pupil 1. And now, our dear guests, let's play a quiz. Look at the screen and answer the questions. If you give a correct answer, you'll get a candy. Let's start.

Pupil 2. Ukrainian holidays are great. They unite people. They make them happy.

Pupil 1. Ukrainian traditions tell about the history of our country and about the life of Ukrainian people. National customs and traditions show the soul of Ukraine.

Pupil 2. We want to sing a famous song “A red ruta” together (slide 18).

(Учасники свята виходять на сцену і разом з гостями співають пісню англійською та українською мовами «Червона рута»).
