Легендарне й історичне минуле. У грецькому місті Олімпія ще за часів Гомера на честь бога Зевса було започатковано спортивні змагання, відомі всьому людству, – Олімпійські ігри.

Цікаво знати!Крім Олімпійських ігор, у Давній Греції проводилися й інші спортивні змагання. Існували Істмійські, Немейські та Піфійські ігри. Вони відбувалися один раз на два або три роки і відрізнялися від Олімпійських поєднанням у собі атлетичних, кінних, поетичних і музичних змагань. Істмійські ігри проводили з 582 р. до н.е. коринфіяни. Немейські відбувалися з ініціативи жителів Аргоса. Піфійські ж ігри проводилися мешканцями Дельф. Переможці останніх отримували вінок із священного лавра.
