Self-portrait Kateryna Bilokur was born in Bohdanivka village Pyriatyn district Poltavska region in 1900 in usual peasant family. Kateryna made some decorations in their local theatre and even acted there. Her first brushes was made with cherry brunches and hen’s feathers or cat’s fur. She could write and read but she didn’t go to school because it was a waste of time and money in her parents’ opinion. So she had to help about the house.

(1935) She tried to enter Myrhorod ceramics technical school and Kyiv theatre technical school but she couldn’t because she didn’t have any school education. She was self-taught artist. Once she heard a nice song by Oksana Petrusenko on the radio and she liked it very much. She wrote a letter to her and put her picture in it . Oksana was impressed with it. She told about the talented artist and asked the representatives of the regional Folk Creation Work House to visit her and look at her works. So Volodymyr Khytko took 11 paintings and it was organized the first Oksana Bilokur’s exhibition in Poltava. Flowers over the hedge

Tsar-Kolos (1949) In 1954 famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso saw her paintings in France at the exhibition and he was delighted much, especially with her Tsar-Kolos. He said: “ If we had such talented artist in Spain we would make all the world speak about her ”. The first variant of this painting was made in 1947. But unfortunately it was stolen. Kateryna Bilokur repaint it again in 1949-1950.

Sculpture The house in Bohdanivka is a museum now. Here you can see a monument to Kateryna Bilokur. The sculpture was made by Ivan Bilokur, artist’s nephew.
