The Present Continuous Tense

The Continuous Form. The Continuous Form denotes an action in progress at the present moment or at a given moment in the past or future. It is formed by means of the auxiliary verb to be in the required tense and Participle I of the notional verb.

The Formation of the Present Continuous The Present Continuous Tense is formed by means of the Present Indefinite of the auxiliary verb to be and the Participle I of the notional verb. The Present Continuous = to be (am, is, are) + V(ing)

In the interrogative form the auxiliary verb is placed before the subject. The Use of the Present Continuous The Present Continuous is used to denote an action going on at the present moment (now), at the time of speaking.“My dear” said John, “you are talking nonsense!”You are not listening to me. Why are you crying?

The Use of the Present Continuous The Present Continuous is used to express an action in its progress going on at the present period of time, not necessarily at the time of speaking: What are you doing here in Kyiv? – I’m studying at the Academy of Statistics, Accounting and Audit here.

The Use of the Present Continuous The Present Continuous is used to express a continuous action going on at the same time with another action referring to the present time: I’m am only happy when I’m working. What does he do when he is not teaching?

The Use of the Present Continuous The Present Continuous is used to express a planned future action, mostly with the verbs denoting motion to go, to come, to leave, to arrive, to start etc.: We are flying to Paris this morning. Are you coming to dance, or are you not?

The Use of the Present Continuous REMEMBER!The State Verbs to have, to see, to know, to hear, to feel, to want, to like, to understand etc. are NOT used with the Present Continuous Tense
