Kyiv is the capital city of Ukraine.

Its population is about 3 million people.

The area of Kyiv is 790 square kilometres.

Kyiv is situated on the steep banks of the Dnieper River. It is a historical, a political, an industrial, and a scientific centre of Ukraine.

Kyiv is a hero-city.

Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Europe.

It was founded in the 5th century by three brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid. The city was named after the eldest brother Kyi.

Kyiv is the city of golden domes and chestnut trees.

Kyiv has many places of historic interest. The heart of the city is Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

People from all over the world come to this ancient monastery, and to St. Sophia‘s Cathedral,

St. Andrew’s Church,

the Golden Gate,to the Park of Glory.

Among the most famous monuments of Kyiv are the monuments to St. Prince Volodymyr, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi,

and Taras Shevchenko.

The Botanical Gardens with their lilac bushes and roses,

Mariinsky Palace,

the Olympic and Valeriy Lobanovskyi Dynamo Stadiums,

Kyiv Zoo,

Khreshchatyk Street, Andriivskyi Uzviz,

the 370 - year-old lime-tree are very popular with Kyivites and tourists.

In the capital you can find a lot of museums, art galleries, theatres, restaurants, souvenir shops and hotels.

Kyiv - Mohyla Academy and Kyiv National University after Taras Shevchenko, the Research Institute after Yevhen Paton, the Aircraft Plant after Antonov are world-known centres of education and science located in Kyiv.

Kyiv Underground was constructed in 1960 and has 53 stations. The most beautiful station is «Zoloti Vorota», richly decorated with mosaics from the history of Rus.

Kyiv is a clean city but there are some problems, such as traffic jams and air pollution in some of its districts.

St. Patron of Kyiv is St. Archangel Michael.
