The story of Canterbury
Canterbury, where the Johnsons live in Charlton Rd, is in the county of Kent in south-east England. Canterbury is a very old town dating from Roman times. It is not far from the coast and the port of Dover with its famous white cliffs. It is also a university town with a large student population. The town is most famous for its Cathedral, which is the centre of the Anglican Church for the whole world and the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, who is the head of the Church in England. There is very interesting story connected with the Cathedral: the story of Thomas Beckett, who was the adviser to the King, Henry 2. In 1162 the King made Thomas the Archbishop of Canterbury. Thomas did not always agree with the King. The King was very angry because of this and four of his knights went to Canterbury to do sometimes about the situation. They murdered Thomas in the Cathedral in 1170. As a result of his death, Canterbury became a place of pilgrimage and there is a famous story by Geoffrey Chaucer called The Canterbury Tales , written in the fourteenth century, which tells about a pilgrimage to Canterbury. In a humorous way, Chaucer describes pilgrim typical of their time such as a miller, a cook, a lawyer and a merchant.
