In Project Based Learning teachers make learning come alive for students.

Slide 2

Project-Based Learning (PBL) provides students with the opportunity to engage in meaningful real-world projects. The goal of each student project is to answer an engaging question, solve a problem, or complete a challenge. Students demonstrate their knowledge and skills by creating a public presentation or product for a real audience.

Students work on a project over an extended period of time – from a week up to a semester – that engages them in solving a real-world problem or answering a complex question.

As a result, students develop their knowledge as well as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication skills.

Slide 3

There are seven critical components that must be included in Project-Based Learning.

Challenging Problem or Question

A PBL project is always based on a meaningful problem to be solved, question to be answered, or challenge to be addressed. A well-designed question, problem, or challenge gives students room to elaborate and explore throughout the learning process.

Sustained Inquiry

A high-quality project requires students to think critically about the driving question, problem, or challenge. Most PBL projects take longer than a few days to complete. Students need enough time to find quality resources, apply learning, synthesize results, and develop a solution.

Authenticity

An authentic project involves real-world context, addresses 21st century skills. An authentic PBL also connects students to other people and communities, creating a unique learning experience.

Student Voice and Choice

Project-Based Learning gives students the opportunity to make decisions about what they create and how to express their ideas. It push them to work harder and care more about their chosen project.

Reflection

A well-designed project includes structured time for reflection. Time set aside for reflection gives students a chance to make necessary project.

Critique and Revision

PBL encourages students to give, receive, and apply feedback to revise and improve their final product. The opportunities for collaboration gives constructive and quality feedback from their peers. This can be done through likes, comments, and awards.

Public Product

The final step of the project is for to students make their work public by sharing, explaining, or presenting it to an audience outside of the classroom. It also allows for increased communication with parents and the outside community.

Why should you use project-based learning?

1. Most students are using technology and apps almost every day. As it happens, those tools can be a perfect fit with project-based learning. With those tools and apps, teachers and students can find the right resources, information, create products and collaborate more effectively.

2. PBL also teaches students to take control of their learning, the first step as a lifelong learner.

3. Through PBL, students learn how to interact with adults and organizations. Even parents and other partners can be involved in certain projects.

4. The fact that students are working on a project that has to be the key of solving a problem, makes them more actively involved. A real project engages their mind and their hearts.

5. Success in life requires more than knowledge and skills. With PBL, students learn how to be responsible, to build their confidence, solve problems, work in teams, and communicate ideas.

6. When you need to solve a problem, you have to be inventive and creative. PBL often asks to solve world class problems.

Slide 5

There are 10 activities (1 page for each) for students to work through. Each page involves a problem or idea they must solve, recreate, or answer.

-So, What Happened was (intro)...

-Text All About It--writing, technology

-Around the World--social studies, map skills

-Around Town--social studies, community, map skills

-The Neighborhood--maps skills, technology

-Instapolar--social media, technology

-Pack Your Bags--reasoning, inference

-Express Polar Travel--creative writing,

-The polar bear problem--math skills, geometry

-Santa’s Village--math, social studies

-You, the Hero--writing, ELA

As students work through each page of the project they will make their own decisions and choose the outcomes. By the end all students will have completed the project, but each version will be based on the users own imagination, creativity, and knowledge base.

Though not needed, students may choose to use textbooks, maps, computers, the Internet, and/more to complete each page. They might even choose to work with a partner, ultimately the choice is yours (as the teacher).

Allow your family to collaborate with ease. You can share your design in progress by simply adding an email address or sharing a link.

1. Research your ancestry and organize your family history research to be added into your family tree. Include specific information for each person, like names, dates, pictures, and geographic locations.

2. Сreate your own family tree by dragging shapes onto the canvas for each family member. Click the shapes to add or modify text and information displayed for each family member.

3. Use lines and text to depict connections between family members as you build out generations. You can format the overall styles, colors, thickness, and end points of your lines to designate different types of relationships.

4. Fill in historical gaps and ensure your family tree is accurate by collaborating with other family members. They can leave comments or edit the diagram in real time for immediate feedback.

5. Give your family members a chance to reflect on their genealogy by sharing your family tree chart via email or published link, or even embed it on the family website for widespread viewing.
